Côtes de Bourg is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for Bordeaux wine situated around the small town of Bourg-sur-Gironde near Bordeaux, France. The first vineyards in the area were founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Bourg was a major port for wine and the vineyards developed at the same tempo as the estuary traffic. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Some Chateaux still use Malbec as part of the blend. The vine has been established in le Bourgeais for centuries and the current varieties have been selected because of their performance in relation to the soil. The Côtes de Bourg are characterized by the diversity and richness of their soils.
Although the Côtes de Bourg is composed of mainly clay and limestone soils, their make-up is so rich that there is a veritable mosaic of sand and gravel in the area around Pugnac. Three types are predominant. Firstly, the Sienna-red Quaternary alluvium that is quite specific to the region and situated more on the heights: Merlot and Malbec are widely cultivated. Merlot and Cabernet are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone.

In the 1950s, the Clos des Menuts only covered one hectare of vineyards. The house of Kessler is one of the few sparkling wine producers in Germany that has its historical roots in the Champagne region. With the expertise he gathered as a director and associate of Veuve Cliquot-Ponsardin, Georg Christian von Kessler founded Germany’s oldest sparkling wine producer on the 1st July 1826. The House of Kessler has always stuck to traditional methods, and used the same bottle fermentation technique. All the top sparkling wines are made according to the méthode traditionelle that the company founder, Georg Christian von Kessler, brought from the Champagne region to Germany exactly 190 years ago. Some of the production is still stored in medieval maturation cellars, where they are shaken by hand.

The Nebbiolo grapes for this wine come from vineyards located in Barolo villages, at 200 to 300 ft. above sea level. The average age of the vines is 50 years and they are grown on a southern exposure in calcareous clay soils, at a density of about 5,000 plants per hectare. After harvesting, the grapes are pressed and the must is fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks after a short period in contact with dry ice to increase complexity and aroma. Skin maceration takes place over 15 days, assuring good color and body. The wine spends 36 months in oak Slavonia casks, and then six months in bottles before shipping. It is presented to the consumer with the following organoleptic characteristics: Color: garnet red with orange tinges. Fragrance: full, ethereal, lasting with the fragrance of flowers and fruits amalgamated with the scent of spices and essences. Taste: dry, intense, robust but velvety and harmonic. This wine goes well with red meat, game and matured cheese. It is advised to drink it at a temperature of 18-20C, decanting it carefully.

Hermitage is one of the famous Grand Cru on the Côte du Rhône. The very elegant Syrah offers dark berry, spicy aromas with strong tannins and is very long-lasting.

The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. Despite its small size, the Hermitage is geologically very diverse. In the highest, western part, the soil consists of granite, which weathers into fine clay. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the Rhône had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. The name of the extremely long-lasting red wine Hermitage goes back to a hermitage founded in 1224 (Hermitage = hermit).
