Riesling is one of the noble grape varieties and is capable of producing a variety of extraordinary white wine styles, and is most known for the sweeter-style German wine it produces.  Although sweet wines dominate this category, there are some amazingly dry and complex wine is produced in Alsace, Germany and the United States. This grape variety dominates in Germany and the majority of the white wines produced there are made in the sweeter style. The Côtes du Jura appellation includes the wines of the French wine region between Burgundy and Switzerland. The dominant grape varieties of the often very mineral wines are Chardonnay and Savagnin for white wines and Pinot Noir, as well as Poulsard and Trousseau for red wines.

The Zibibbo is one of the most typical wines of Sicily. The Phoenicians probably brought the noble grape variety Muscat d'Alexandrie to the island. Often made sweet, Gibele is a dry, fruity, fresh white wine with an intoxicating scent of nutmeg. The Carlo Pellegrino winery was one of the first Sicilian producers of Marsala in 1880.

Sicily is considered the cradle of Italian viticulture. Many of today's autochthonous grapes descend from the ancient grape varieties cultivated at the time.

The dry Schloss-Riesling of the von Schubert family. The estate wines of the winery come exclusively from the Grand Cru sites of the Maximin Grünhaus vineyard. The location of the old estate on the Ruwer is spectacular - the vineyards Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg stretch out in a row from the little river Ruwer and the von Schubert family's estate house on a southern exposure. The soil is bluish Devonian slate on a steep slope.

Côtes du Rhône with incisive fruit (Grenache blueberry and red Syrah fruit) and a hint of black pepper. Domaine de la Solitude is one of the most traditional wineries in the Châteauneuf du Pape region. The oldest wine from La Solitude dates back to 1780 and the estate has been in the family since 400. The classic red wine of the Côtes du Rhône appellation is made from 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Mouvedre.

The history of this famous appellation in the southern section of the Rhône is closely linked to the popes. From 1309 to 1377, the city of Avignon was the seat of the popes and from 1378 to 1408 of two counter-popes. One of them was Pope John XXII (1244-1334), born in Cahors, who chose Châteauneuf Castle as his summer residence and gave important impulses to viticulture. The 3,140-hectare area was the first state-recognised appellation in France.

A typical Nebbiolo from the Roero growing region - powerful, fragrant, without wood aging. Pierangelo Careglio's winery is an ambitious family business that was founded in 1986 on very old vineyards with 9 hectares of vineyards. Typical for Roero is the sandy soil with clay and limestone parts. The wines from here are more aromatic and robust than their relatives from the Barolo region.

Best Primitivo of the Sampietrana wine cooperative. The red grape variety Primitivo is mainly cultivated in the southern Italian region of Apulia. It probably comes from Croatia/Dalmatia and was given its name in the 17th century by Benedictine monks due to its early maturity (Latin primativus = first-mover). From there it probably found its way to Italy and also to Germany via Austria under the name Blauer Scheuchner. Since it was first detected near the mountain town of Gioia, it is also called Primitivo di Gioia. It produces deep, dark, spicy and high-alcohol red wines and is often used as a blending partner for late-ripening varieties. Vine growers for 4 generations, Nicolas Gaudry take pride in cultivating their 28 hectares of vines, situated on the best slopes of the Pouilly vineyard. Pouilly-Fumé is, next to Sancerre, the origin of the best Sauvignon Blanc from France. In Pouilly-Fumé, the vines grow on flintstone soil and here is the rare case that you can actually taste smoky notes in the wine.

The Innesto is a white pressed wine made from the red wine grape variety of Etna Nerello Mascalese. This gave the wine a nice full fruit. The Valenti winery is relatively young. It was only founded in 2004 and newly planted on almost 30 hectares. The soils are among the best on Mount Etna and in Sicily in general - Passopisciaro in the municipality of Castiglione di Sizilia.

Pinot Blanc has been cultivated in South Tyrol since 1850 and has been one of the most important grape varieties for the St. Michael Winery for decades. With over 1,000 hectares of vineyards, Eppan - the gateway to the Dolomites - is South Tyrol's largest wine-growing area in the heart of the province of Bolzano. The 385 hectares of vineyards belonging to the 330 members of St. Michael-Eppan are spread over sunny slopes. The Schulthauser was first bottled in 1982 and has since become one of South Tyrol's best-known Pinot Blancs. This method takes advantage of cooler temperatures, which allow for a safer and healthier transfer of the ripe grapes to the stainless-steel containers in the cellar for maceration and fermentation.

The Chablis wine region is the northernmost of the Burgundy wine regions. The name was very well known, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, and at that time was synonymous with a dry white wine. Chablis is almost equidistant from Champagne, from Sancerre on the Loire and from the nearest Burgundy locations on the Côte d'Or. The cool wine-growing climate gives the Chardonnay a pronounced acidity, which the winemaker usually leaves in the wine in favor of the fruitiness. The wines are therefore mostly matured in stainless steel tanks and do not go through malolactic fermentation. The steely acidity, which is strongly determined by the comparatively high proportion of malic acid, is one of the hallmarks of Chablis and gives the white wine a remarkable longevity.

The Rosso di Montalcino from Poggio alle Mura is one of the very good small Brunellos of the wine region. 100% Sangiovese from the carefully researched and selected grape variety variations at Banfi - there are a total of about 600 Sangiovese clones with very specific characteristics.

Chenin Blanc is one of the finest white wine grape varieties. It is at home on the Loire near Anjou, more precisely in Vouvray and Layon. The highly rated Château Soucherie winery was once the castle of the Dukes of Brissac. The vineyards cover 28 hectares.

The Tement winery has now achieved cult status for its precise, carefully organically handcrafted Sauvignon Blanc from Styria in Austria. Fresh citrus aromas, yellow fruit, elder and cassis with lots of minerality.

The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level.
