Until about the 1950s, many Bordeaux Châteaus sold their wines in barrels, either to negociants in Bordeaux or directly to international merchants such as the Belgium-based Vandermeulen or Berry Bros. & Rudd in London. These merchants then bottled the wine themselves, hence the designation of a "Vandermeulen bottling."
