Description of the product
Torre Quarto winery was built by the French Dukes de la Rochefoucauld, in 1847. They had large estates in southern Italy, and the one in Cerignola was their greatest one. It covered an area of about 5000 hectares of which 3000 were vineyards.
That's why they built their winery in the area surrounding Cerignola. It was called “Quarto Ducale” (that means “duke quarter”), because the estates was a quarter of the Cerignola district. Here the Dukes de la Rochefoucauld produced red wine that they sent to France, where it was used for blending and bottled to be sold as French wine. They had a private railway line to link their winery to the nearest railway station, to send their wine to France regularty.
The wine was aged in French oak casks, over 150 of these huge casks (containing each about 290 hl) are still kept the cellars of Torre Quarto. In the 1930s the Belgian family Solvay Bautier became owner of this winery and renamed it “Torre Quarto”, after the tower which part of the building, which was one, a schnapps distillery.

Salice Salentino is one of the earliest established appellations in Italy, dating back to 1939. Made from a blend of 90% Negroamaro, a dark-skinned grape known for its tannic structure, and 10% Malvasia Nera. The grapes from these mature vines are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel and left to refine in large oak casks for six months before bottling.

Malvasia Nera is the more fruity version of Negroamaro with the best results in Puglia and Tuscany. The Sampietrana winery was founded in 1952 as a cooperative. The vines for Malvasia are more than 50 years old.
The Italian region of Apulia (Puglia) with its capital Bari is located deep in the south on the Adriatic coast. The elongated region consists of the spur (the Gargano Mountains) and the heel (the Salento Peninsula) of the boot. The area is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world, as the Phoenicians and Greeks planted vines here 3,000 years ago. The Romans particularly valued the wine from Tarentum (port city of Taranto) and the poet Horace (65-8 BC) described this area as a place of “eternal spring”. In contrast to the other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains, but the landscape consists of plateaus and flatlands. The climate is dry and hot with little rainfall, so artificial irrigation is sometimes necessary. The soils consist primarily of limestone, clay and sandstone. Puglia has the most grape varieties in southern Italy, around 80 percent of which are red.

Compact, concentrated Primitivo with 18% alcohol. In Puglia there is a peculiar tradition for wines - the wines are named succinctly according to their alcohol content (and in this case that means their intensity): 18/20 is a powerful yet classically fruity Primitivo with an astonishing 18% alcohol. A Primitivo that is different from the mainstream: salty with herbal aromas, absolutely dry. If you know them, you can smell the typical wild capers of southern Italy. No wonder, the vineyards are only a few hundred meters from the coast. Le Fiatte is run by the 4th generation of the Bisci family. They only produce a small number of wine types - a Primitivo, a Fiano, a Negroamaro Rosé - but with consistency and independence in terms of quality.
Calcium-rich soil of corsican origin, enriched with red iron oxide (typical of the Salento soil). The limestone soils are cool and have good water retention, allowing the vines' root system to penetrate deeply and providing excellent drainage. After the first pressing, the grapes undergo a maceration of 8-10 days.
The red grape variety Primitivo is mainly cultivated in the southern Italian region of Apulia. It probably comes from Croatia/Dalmatia and was given its name in the 17th century by Benedictine monks due to its early maturity (Latin primativus = first-mover). From there it probably found its way to Italy and also to Germany via Austria under the name Blauer Scheuchner. Since it was first detected near the mountain town of Gioia, it is also called Primitivo di Gioia. It produces deep, dark, spicy and high-alcohol red wines and is often used as a blending partner for late-ripening varieties. According to Dr. According to DNA analyzes carried out by Carole Meredith in 2001 at the University of California in collaboration with Croatian grape specialists, the Primitivo is identical to the Californian Zinfandel.

Traditional, expertly made, sturdy hinges, elegant with engraving , fitted with wood wool. For 1 bottle of wine (up to 0.75l).
With a gift wine wooden box you can present the valuable wine appropriately. The most beautiful would certainly be an old original wooden box. However, the best wines from Bordeaux and often also from Piedmont are only delivered in 12 wine wooden boxes or 6 wine wooden boxes. The boxes themselves are not an elaborate affair. Even though the wine that is transported in them can cost several hundred euros per bottle, such a wooden box is made of simple spruce or pine wood.
We have orientated ourselves on the simple wooden crates of the wineries and chateaux when selecting our wooden crates. With one or two compromises: our wooden wine boxes are not closed with staples like the originals, but have a hinged lid with sturdy hinges. So you can present the wine without damaging the box.
And the wine gift box is not available as a box of 12, but only as a wooden box of 1, 2 or 3. This is because it is usually used as gift packaging for only 1-3 bottles of a rare old vintage wine.
It took some time of searching to find a wooden wine box of sufficiently high quality. We had been annoyed for a long time about deficiencies in the workmanship of the wooden boxes. Cheap hinges peeling off, nails driven in crookedly or even staples that held the wooden box together more badly than well.
The seemingly noble veneered gift boxes with silk lining from China also failed to convince us.
In the meantime, we have the wooden boxes made according to our specifications. A simple, light wood, glazed reddish brown and classically expertly joined with the so-called tenons and sides. You can recognise this traditional joining of the sides by the characteristic chequerboard pattern that runs along the corners of the wooden crate.
Wooden parts joined in this way do not need nails or staples.
We have had an engraving inserted into the dark top. In this way we pick up on the exterior of the original wooden crates: on the front or the lid you can see the logo and the name of the winery. We had to find a solution for all the wines from all the different wineries. That's why our wooden wine box carries the antique wine logo and our choice of name. We stand by the wines we send you. We stand with our name for their authenticity as well as for the perfect state of preservation and the famous origin of each wine. That is why the wooden wine box bears our logo and the motto vinum antiquum non sine nomine as an engraving. This means: old wines with rank and name.
PS: Our customers often ask whether we can also engrave the name of the presentee or similar on the box. Unfortunately, such laser engravings can only be used on uncoloured wooden crates and then result in a pale brownish image. We recommend inserting your personal dedication together with the wine documents on the inside of the lid.
