Description of the product
Chénas is one of the 10 cru sites in Beaujolais, producing elegant, delicate and very long-lasting wines from the Gamay Noir grape variety. Beaujolais is known as the most scenic part of French Burgundy. The name is derived from the Beaujeu family, who ruled here from 950 to 1400. The small town of Beaujeu, the first capital of Beaujolais, was built at the foot of their castle-fortress. The area is 50 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide. The Sâone river valley lies to the east and the Burgundian region of Mâconnais borders to the north, with which Beaujolais overlaps to a small extent. Until the middle of the 17th century, viticulture played only a minor role here. This was also due to the poor transport possibilities of the wine to the large collection centres; the wine was drunk in the area itself. The construction of the Briare Canal, which connected the two rivers Loire and Seine from 1642, opened up the market to Paris.
