The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the RhĂ´ne broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. Despite its small size, the Hermitage is geologically very diverse. In the highest, western part, the soil consists of granite, which weathers into fine clay. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the RhĂ´ne had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the WĂĽrme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. The name of the extremely long-lasting red wine Hermitage goes back to a hermitage founded in 1224 (Hermitage = hermit).

Mille e una Notte is the legendary wine that made Donnafugata suddenly famous. It is an assemblage of indigenous and international grape varieties - Nero d'Avola, Petit Verdot, Syrah, etc. and is based on premium wines such as Ornellaia, Sassicaia and Tignanello. Hand-picking, perfect grapes, aging in new French oak barriques for 14 months serve to create a complex, very long-living red wine. Over 800 kilometres long, the RhĂ´ne is one of the most important wine rivers in the world. The Greeks founded the city of Marseille (Massilia) at the mouth of the RhĂ´ne in the 6th century BC and brought the grapevine to the RhĂ´ne valley. The Celts (Gauls) also cultivated vines in the now famous CĂ´te RĂ´tie and Hermitage areas. At the beginning of the 14th century, the papal court was moved to Avignon. This gave a strong boost to viticulture, as most of the wine served at the papal table came from the RhĂ´ne Valley. The Crozes-Hermitages appellation in the northern section of the RhĂ´ne is classified as a cru site. It is located in the southern part of the section on the left bank of the RhĂ´ne. The vineyards cover 1,300 hectares of vines in eleven communes in the DĂ©partement of DrĂ´me. The red wines are made from Syrah and a maximum of 15% Marsanne or Roussane, the white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne. A well-known lover of the wines was the locally famous bandit Mandrin.

The Lancon family has only owned the vineyards in Gigondas for a few years. The Domaine de la Solitude winery has been owned by the Lancon family for over 400 years, making it one of the oldest in the Châteauneuf du Pape wine region. It took some time of searching to find a wooden wine box of sufficiently high quality. We had been annoyed for a long time about deficiencies in the workmanship of the wooden boxes. The seemingly noble veneered gift boxes with silk lining from China also failed to convince us.
In the meantime, we have the wooden boxes made according to our specifications. A simple, light wood, glazed reddish brown and classically expertly joined with the so-called tenons and sides. You can recognise this traditional joining of the sides by the characteristic chequerboard pattern that runs along the corners of the wooden crate.
Wooden parts joined in this way do not need nails or staples.
We have had an engraving inserted into the dark top. In this way we pick up on the exterior of the original wooden crates: on the front or the lid you can see the logo and the name of the winery. We had to find a solution for all the wines from all the different wineries. That's why our wooden wine box carries the antique wine logo and our choice of name. We stand by the wines we send you. We stand with our name for their authenticity as well as for the perfect state of preservation and the famous origin of each wine. That is why the wooden wine box bears our logo and the motto vinum antiquum non sine nomine as an engraving. This means: old wines with rank and name.
