Wine vertical
A bottle of wine of the year 1969 is a rarity and unique finding. The taste of the wine, which is defined by its old age, can be on the limit of enjoyment for some. Therefore, an interesting alternative to buying a wine as old as ones anniversary, can be to recreate the years of the jubilee with three younger wine bottles, which together are as old. The tasting of the years through single steps is a charming present for any wine lover. Wine experts love these kind of vertical wine tastings: they emphasize the different phases of these valuable wines, and how their color and taste both change when ripening.- 1940

Sfursat, or Sforzato, is obtained from hand-made selection of the best bunches of Nebbiolo-Chiavennasca grapes, which are dried on wooden racks in a well ventilated and dry room, a "fruttaio", until late January. This treatment leads to a high concentration of natural sugars and special aromas. The dehydration of the grape varies between 35-40%, the berries are dry and their concentrated juice has developed specific and very intense aromatic substances. The vinification process consists of soft pressing of the grapes and subsequent fermentation. A 2 to 3 year ageing in oak casks and a final 6 to 12 month bottle refinement give this red wine its uniqueness.

Rubesco is a proprietary brand, derived from the Latin verb rubescere; to blush: hence, a joyous meaning. On the label, a bas-relief depicting the harvest, detail from the Fontana Maggiore of Perugia, one of Italy’s most beautiful 13th-century fountains. Founded in the early 60’s by Giorgio Lungarotti in Torgiano, the company soon became a driving force that opened up new opportunities not only for Torgiano but for the whole Umbria. In 1964 was the first harvest of Rubesco Reserve: grapes, Sangiovese and Canaiolo, the same variety of Rubesco, come from a particular vineyard, named Monticchio. In 1968 comes the first DOC Umbria Torgiano Red as recognition to the quality of the wines of Giorgio Lungarotti.

Nebbiolo is a red Italian wine grape variety predominantly associated with the Piedmont region where it makes the wines of Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Gattinara. Nebbiolo is thought to derive its name from the Italian word nebbia which means fog. Nebbiolo does not adapt exceptionally well to various vineyard soil types, preferring soils with high concentration of calcareous marl such as those found on the right bank of the Tanaro river around Alba where the finest Barolo and Barbaresco are produced.

The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. Since 1970, the Castello has been under local ownership. The winery estate, which is located at the center of Barolo, presently belongs to the Abbona family, which purchased in the late 19th century. The original and distinguished wines produced by Marchesi di Barolo are characterized by a number of highly prestigious native vines and a unique soil composition, with amalgams of clay, limestone marl, blueish marl, tuff, sandstone and sand. In order to better define and enhance their different characteristics, the most prestigious historical crus are made from a single variety, and individually aged and bottled.

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

Arnaud III de Pontac, a leading nobleman and the first president of the regional parliament- who insisted that the red wine from his family's estate, located in Pessac, was an unique, that didn't had sold to négociants, who then blended it with other wines. Starting in 1660, he demanded a premium price for a wine with a name that no one beyond Bordeaux knew- "Haut- Brion", his family estate. After all, he sent his son to London five years later to open a tavern, where his wines were sold so exclusively and at quite steep prices. The vineyard of Château Haut Brion is planted to 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. The high Merlot content, compared to the Médoc First Growths, gives the wine a voluptuous edge, but does not in any way detract from its ability to age. Haut Brion was purchased by the American financier and politician Clarence Dougless Dillion in 1935. His granddaughter still owns and operates Haut-Brion to this day.
