 In 1844 Luciano Francisco Ramòn de Murrieta, returned to his home near Logrono in Rioja from England, where he  developed an appreciation for wine, recognized that there was nothing wrong with the grapes growing in Rioja's vineyards. The only problem was that the wine was not being produced correctly. Hermitage is one of the famous Grand Cru on the Côte du Rhône. The very elegant Syrah offers dark berry, spicy aromas with strong tannins and is very long-lasting.

The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the Rhône had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. Conterno, is a family of emigrated in Argentina, who returned to Monforte d'Alba, at the end of the 19th century. They increased the production of local wine to be sold in casks not only in Piedmont and Liguria but in the Americas, thanks to parents who stayed in Argentina. Motivated by success, the Conternos began to create a superior Barolo, to be produced exclusively in the best vintages, which saw long vinification periods and was extremely long-lived.
