Wine 2020
The year 2020 brought frost again in some wine regions after a very mild spring. Due to the now usual warmth and dryness in summer, the grape harvest has to take place much earlier and lasts for a very short time. The optimal time for the aromatic ripeness of the grapes has to be found before the acidity levels become too low. Elaborate wineries are prepared for this and have enough staff to react quickly. ... In Bordeaux and Piedmont there was abundant rainfall in the spring, which compensated for the enormous heat in the summer. In Germany, frost occurred again and heavy rain in autumn.

The Rosso di Montalcino from Banfi is one of the very good small Brunellos of the wine region. 100% Sangiovese from the carefully researched and selected grape variety variations at Banfi - there are a total of about 600 Sangiovese clones with very specific characteristics.
Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG for dry red wine in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone includes the slopes around the picturesque hilltop town of Montalcino - 40 kilometres south of Siena in the province of the same name. The wine is made from 100 per cent varietal Sangiovese Brunello. An important aspect of the quality lies in the very special climate, as it is warmer and drier than in the nearby Chianti areas and the nights are cooler. The Castello di Banfi winery was founded by two Italian-Americans from New York, Harry and John Mariani, who had become very wealthy by importing Lambrusco. In the mid-1970s, they created a very ambitious wine project based on the highest quality, which quickly gained great recognition.

Moscato Giallo belongs to the Muscat family, very probably coming from the Oriental Mediterranean Sea and arrived in Italy through the trades of the Venetian merchants. Very different from Moscato Bianco and Moscato di Alessandria, Moscato Giallo is mostly common in Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli: a veriety of premature ripening, in the tradition of Trentino it is proposed as a dry, fresh and very perfumed wine, with an aromatic quality that is balanced by a fragrant sapidity.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

Côtes de Bourg is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for Bordeaux wine situated around the small town of Bourg-sur-Gironde near Bordeaux, France. The first vineyards in the area were founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Bourg was a major port for wine and the vineyards developed at the same tempo as the estuary traffic. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Some Chateaux still use Malbec as part of the blend. The vine has been established in le Bourgeais for centuries and the current varieties have been selected because of their performance in relation to the soil. The Côtes de Bourg are characterized by the diversity and richness of their soils.
Although the CĂ´tes de Bourg is composed of mainly clay and limestone soils, their make-up is so rich that there is a veritable mosaic of sand and gravel in the area around Pugnac. Three types are predominant. Firstly, the Sienna-red Quaternary alluvium that is quite specific to the region and situated more on the heights: Merlot and Malbec are widely cultivated. Merlot and Cabernet are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone.

Historically the name should be given only to the municipalities of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, that were part of the ancient "Florentine Military League of Chianti" whose symbol was a black rooster. More recently, due to the regulation of the wine's designation, "Chianti" is the area within the three old municipalities of the Chianti League and the area to San Casciano and Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa, Greve and part of Barberino Val D'Elsa, and the Sienese areas of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi. Only wines produced within these municipalities can be named "Chianti Classico" and are certified with the famous Black Rooster symbol.

Today, Susumaniello is almost exclusively found in Apulia, although it originally comes from Croatia. It was almost extinct because of its low yield. In the meantime, however, ambitious winegrowers are again relying on the red grape variety to produce extraordinary wines. The hot, sunny climate of Apulia softens the initially high acidity of the Susumaniello. The wine has a nice fruity spiciness. The resemblance to Sangiovese is noticeable.

The hilltops of Sancerre vineyards spread through 14 villages. The two grape varieties in Sancerre are the Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinot Noir. They have gained the AOC status in 1936. The red and rosé wines, made from the noble Pinot Noir, followed in 1959 when they were awarded the AOC accreditation.
The red wines illustrate the virtues of Pinot Noir. They offer a bouquets of cherry and morellos.
In the 12th century, cultivation of vines was given added impetus through the combined efforts of the Augustine monks in St-Satur and the ruling counts of Sancerre. At that time Sancerre was famous for its red wine, produced predominantly from the Pinot Noir grape, and exported from the region along the Loire. This wine is often mentioned in accounts of life at the royal court. The famous wine of Sancerre was, in the opinion of Duke Jean de Berry, indeed the finest wine to be found in the entire kingdom.

The Valenti winery is relatively young. It was only founded in 2004 and newly planted on almost 30 hectares. The soils are among the best on Mount Etna and in Sicily in general - Passopisciaro in the municipality of Castiglione di Sizilia. The elegant Rosato has its basis in the red wine grape variety of Etna Nerello Mascalese. The Etna wines are reminiscent of Pinot Noir or even more of German Pinot Noir - mineral, with fresh cherry fruit and careful aging in wood.
In the "Storia die Vini d'Italia" (History of the Wines of Italy), published in 1596, wines from here are mentioned and their exceptional quality attributed to the fly ash blown in from Mount Etna.
The grape varieties used are 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio.

The Monferrato zone lays claim to being Barbera's birthplace, and records of it growing there as far back as the 13th century. But the hills around Alba and Monforte d'Alba have proved they are capable of growing some particularly fine Barbera, as are parts of the Asti province. Century-old vines still exist in many regional vineyards and allow for the production of long-aging, robust red wines with intense fruit and enhanced tannic content. The best known appellation is the DOCG(Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) Barbera D'Asti in the Piedmont region.

The classification of German wines is very different from that of Italy. The VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) is the Association of Quality German Winegrowers, and brings together the producers who can offer the highest results, very similar to the organisation of Burgundy territories. Furthermore, wines that are only made from grapes from certain plots of the best vineyards are called VDP Grosse Lage, similar to the 'Grand Cru' in Bourgogne. In this bottle of Riesling, the parcel is in Herrenberg. And finally within the Grosse Lage there are the Grosses Gewächs (GG), the dry wines in this category.

The best and most elaborate Passito di Pantelleria from Pellegrino. Gently pressed grapes become the finely structured sweet wine from the small volcanic island of Pantelleria. The aromas reflect the closeness of the sea and the south - a fascinating saltiness, orange peel, ripe apricot, dried fruit. The traditional grape variety is Zibbibo - that is, the noble grape variety Moscato d'Alessandria. The wines from Pantelleria are part of the Unesco world cultural heritage. Be sure to try them! The Carlo Pellegrino winery was one of the first Sicilian producers of Marsala in 1880.

The Herrenberg Grosse Gewächs. The 19-hectare vineyard borders the Abtsberg and is benefiting from climate change. The wines are spicy, intense, with a certain creaminess. The Maximin Grünhaus vineyard has only Grand Cru sites. The vineyards of the old estate on the Ruwer are situated in a spectacular location: the Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg vineyards extend in a row from the small Ruwer river and the south-facing von Schubert family manor house. The soil consists of bluish Devonian slate on a steep slope.

Long-lived red wine classic from Burgundy. The elegant red wine from Philippe Germain comes from a tiny vineyard parcel of 0.7 hectares and matures for 14 months in oak barrels. The Pommard appellation, named after the commune of the same name, with 313 hectares of vineyards, is located in the Côte de Beaune part of Burgundy's Côte d'Or. It adjoins the commune of Volnay. The Cistercians already owned vineyards here in the 12th century. The clergyman Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described this wine in his famous book. Almost exclusively red wines are made from Pinot Noir with portions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault. There are about 30 Premiers Crus with 128 hectares of vineyards.
