Wine grape variety Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the most important white wine grape variety in the world. Firstly, because of its fame and spread, and secondly, because the best and most expensive white wines are made from Chardonnay. And from the famous single vineyards in Burgundy. The wines are relatively full-bodied and high in alcohol and harmonize very well with aging in oak barrels. The best and longest-lived Chardonnays in Burgundy have buttery, nutty aromas. Steely mineral they are in Chablis. The best Champagnes are also single varietal Chardonnay. ...

Chardonnay needs deep, chalky soils in prime locations. In Burgundy, France, the best vineyards are in Montrachet, Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne.

Typical aromas are melon, exotic fruits, ripe gooseberries. The aging in wooden barrels adds nuances of honey and nut.

It was only toward the middle of the 19th century, however, that production was begun of a dry type of wine, which brought out all of Barbaresco's extraordinary qualities. Professor Domizio Cavazza, a noted enologist, introduced new vinification techniques and, in 1894, founded a cooperative winery exclusively dedicated to the production of Barbaresco. Barbaresco is 100% made with the Nebbiolo grape. The dry red wine is produced in the Piedmont region in an area of the Langhe immediately to the east of Alba and specifically in the comunes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive plus that area of the frazione San Rocco. SW16282 1993 Barolo Fratelli Giacosa Vigna Colonnello
Piemonte - Barbaresco

Barolo is the most important wine in Italy. However, the growing area around the town of Barolo has a typical Piedmont characteristic. The 1,300-hectare wine region is shared by almost as many winegrowers and wineries. Wineries with 3-4 hectares of vineyards are not uncommon. Many of the Barolo winegrowers do not bottle themselves or only grow wine on the side. And, of course, there are prime locations and less interesting vineyards. Therefore, of the approximately 1,000 wineries of DOC Barolo, only about 15-20 belong to the serious Barolo producers. In Monforte d'Alba in the Bussia Soprana area there is Vigna Colonello. This is one of the best parts of Piedmont. If there is an increase for the very good vineyards of Bussia Soprana, then the Vigna Colonello vineyard is one of them. Here the sunlight is optimal, the soil composition of the grey-blue shimmering marl ideal for storing heat.

SW18386 1981 Barbaresco Riserva Giacomo Borgogno
Piemonte - Barbaresco

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

SW18779 1980 Barbaresco Cascina Paruzzo
Piemonte - Barbaresco

Barbaresco, located just north of Alba (Barolo is just to the southwest), is quite similar to Barolo in aromas and flavors, which can include cherry, plum, raspberry, licorice, truffle, mushroom, dried rose, road tar, leather, marzipan, underbrush, and menthol. Barbaresco is normally a somewhat more elegant wine with a bit less body and tannic grip, but the similarities between the wines far outweigh the differences. In fact, a Barbaresco may be as powerful as, and require more aging than, many new-wave examples of Barolo--and can be capable of 20 years or more of positive evolution in bottle.

With the 1980 Barbaresco Luigi Cauda, comes a personal present meant for a person who is very special to you.

SW17758 1982 Barbaresco Marchese di Villadoria
Piemonte - Barbaresco
The classical dry red wine comes from the Barbaresco DOC in Northern Italy, the important wine region of Piedmont. Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Piedmont. It is a wine of extremely ancient origin and was mentioned by Livy in his monumental History of Rome. SW11754 1979 Barbaresco Riserva Giacomo Borgogno

SW18557 1967 Barbaresco Riserva Speciale Marchese di Villadoria
Piemonte - Barbaresco
The classical dry red wine comes from the Barbaresco DOC in Northern Italy, the important wine region of Piedmont.
Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Piedmont. It is a wine of extremely ancient origin and was mentioned by Livy in his monumental History of Rome.
The soils of Barbaresco zone are composed primarily of calcareous marl dating from the Tortonian epoch.
When subjected to aging of at least five years before release, the wine can be labeled a Riserva.
