Barolo is the most important wine in Italy. However, the growing area around the town of Barolo has a typical Piedmont characteristic. The 1,300-hectare wine region is shared by almost as many winegrowers and wineries. Wineries with 3-4 hectares of vineyards are not uncommon. The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

The roots of the winery date back to 1897 when Lodovico Borgogno came into the family house and cellar to. When he died, Serio and Battista Borgogno inherited some land and a small farmhouse in Cannubi. They build their house and their winery on top of Cannubi, buying more vineyards all around for a total of 3 ha, in the heart of this top Cru area. They were able to grasp the great potential of a place that is now worldwide known and that is considered one of the best cru in Barolo.

Contratto was founded in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto and the winery is known as the oldest producer of sparkling wine in Italy. In fact, the "Metodo Classico" 1919 Contratto Extra Brut was the first vintage sparkling wine ever made in the country.  At the turn of the 20th century Contratto was the personal supplier to the Vatican as well as to the Italian Royal Family.
