Wine grape variety Chardonnay
Chardonnay needs deep, chalky soils in prime locations. In Burgundy, France, the best vineyards are in Montrachet, Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne.
Typical aromas are melon, exotic fruits, ripe gooseberries. The aging in wooden barrels adds nuances of honey and nut.

Historically the name should be given only to the municipalities of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, that were part of the ancient "Florentine Military League of Chianti" whose symbol was a black rooster. More recently, due to the regulation of the wine's designation, "Chianti" is the area within the three old municipalities of the Chianti League and the area to San Casciano and Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa, Greve and part of Barberino Val D'Elsa, and the Sienese areas of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi. Only wines produced within these municipalities can be named "Chianti Classico" and are certified with the famous Black Rooster symbol.

Half bottle. Castello di Ama is located about 12 miles northeast of Siena in the hills of Gaiole in the heart of Chianti Classico. Ama is a modern estate comprising 500 acres of land, 200 of which are vineyards. These vineyards are divided into five important parcels; San Lorenzo, Bellavista, La Casuccia, Bertinga and Montebuoni.
Vintage 2010 heralded the introduction of Gran Selezione and the release of the new Chianti Classico, “Ama”. Ama is a blend made entirely almost with the grapes of the new clones of Sangiovese, according to our experience and the most modern technique of quality viticulture. These are planted and grown with a density of 5,200 vines per hectare in our four estate vineyards: Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo and Montebuoni, with an average age inferior to 8/10 years.

The Tenuta di Vignole winery is located in Panzano, in the heart of Chianti Classico. With an area of 21 hectares, 14 of which are reserved for specialised vineyards, the farm is located in the valley of the river Pesa, better known in the Panzano area as "La Conca d'Oro" because of the high quality of the wines produced there, at an altitude of between 290 and 320 metres and extends on both sides of a hill facing south-east and south-west. Today, the company practices agriculture based on the principles of naturalness and sustainability. To protect the environment and maintain quality, no synthetic chemicals are used: better quality soil, better quality wine. Vignole Chianti Classico is a blend of Sangiovese (90%) and Merlot (10%) grapes, harvested by hand (Merlot at the end of September and Sangiovese at the beginning of October). The grapes are vinified separately in cement vats, with a 15-day maceration on the skins. The wines are aged separately for 12 months, the Sangiovese in medium oak barrels and the Merlot in small French barrels. After blending, the wine is aged in the bottle for another 12 months before release.

A Chianti Riserva is the highest quality level of the classic red wine from Tuscany. The grape selection is more complex and the yield is more limited, the minimum alcohol content is higher and the ripening time is longer than with simple Chianti. A Riserva appears denser, fuller-bodied and spicier. Chianti is that part of Tuscany that is bordered to the north by the suburbs of Florence, to the east by the Chianti Mountains, to the south by the city of Siena and to the west by the valleys of the Pesa and Elsa rivers. The first notarial document in which the name Chianti appeared in reference to the wine produced in the zone dates to 1398.

Vignamaggio is one of Tuscany’s oldest farming estates, a Renaissance treasure trove in the heart of the Chianti region, positioned on the hills at the source of the Greve River and it is the setting for the adaptation of Kenneth Branagh in 1993 of the theatrical comedy “Much ado about nothing” of William Shakespeare. Wine Obsession is an hommage an Kalvin Klein, a great enthusiast of Vignamaggio's wines. Obsession is a blend of Merlot (70-80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20-30%), some from old vines, aged in barriques for 15-18 months. With this wine Vignamaggio breaks with the common use of Sangiovese for tuscany wines. Complex aroma with notes of fruit, spice and liquorice, which follow through into a flavor that is smooth yet intense. Six labels painted by six different artists all adhering to a common theme, which changes every 3 vintages.

Tuscany is the land of Chianti wine: Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, Pistoia and Prato are the provinces that represent the places of production vocation, whose soils, cultivated for centuries with vines and delimited by regulations, draw those unmistakable sceneries impressed in the collective imagination of every wine lover. Chianti Riserva is intended to be an intense and remarkable expression of Sangiovese and its great capacity to evolve over many years. In each of the sub-areas as well as for generic Chianti, the Riserva category must age in the cellar for a minimum of 24 months before release. The objective of the Riserva wines is to undergo significant ageing and long evolution in the bottle, so more attention is paid to careful selection of the bunches and grapes, longer fermentation and deep maceration on the skins, and the choice of the type of wood, age and capacity of the barrels.

All Chianti wine is classified as DOCG (i.e., Guarantee of the Origin and Quality of Selected Wines); however, each Chianti is different and its characteristics vary according to its territory of origin and winemaking tradition. The blend of grapes is always the same, though the percentages vary: Sangiovese (75-90%), Canaiolo (5-10%), and Malvasia del Chianti (5-10%). The perfect recipe was developed by Baron Ricasoli in the 19th century, with the later addition of Trebbiano Toscano. So deeply rooted is this method that Tuscan wine growers plant their varying grapevines together in the exact proportions needed to make the wine.

At the beginning of the XIII century the two cities, worn by the war over Chianti, decided to assign the definition of the border to the meeting point between two knights each coming from their city at cockcrow. The Florentines relied on a black rooster, which having been left without food crowed well before daybreak, allowing the knight from Florence to start with a great advantage and travel a long way before meeting precisely at Fonterutoli, almost within sight of Siena. Florence brought its border to Fonterutoli on the line of Castellina, Radda, and Gaiole, and established the Military and Administrative Alliance of Chianti, choosing the Black Rooster as its shield.

One of the most historic and prestigious wine producers in the region. Chianti D.O.C.G. can be produced from a mandatory minimum of 70% to 100% Sangiovese. Sangiovese, the soul of Chianti, is a native Italian black grape variety. It is traditionally the most emblematic grape of Tuscany: the majority of the most traditional and prestigious wines of this region are produced from this variety. In addition to Sangiovese, there are other grape varieties such as Canaiolo, which is used to lend softness to Chianti and was more widely cultivated than Sangiovese itself in the 18th century. The Colorino vine, which owes its name to the intense colour of its skin. It was used extensively in Chianti blends in the past to reinforce its colour and texture.

The Melini winery is very old, even by Italian standards. It was founded in 1705 by the Melini family from Florence. Bottling, which was rare at the time, began as early as 1860. The Chianti bulbous basket bottles can be traced back to the Melini winery - at that time, the innovation was a decisive improvement in wine quality. In 1877, Melini was awarded a gold medal for its wine. In 1970, the winery was one of the first to produce its wines in single vineyards.

The Antinori family has been involved in the production of wine for over six centuries, ever since, in 1385, Giovanni di Piero Antinori entered as a member, the “Arte Fiorentina”, the Winemakers’ Guild of the city of Florence. During this entire long period, thorough twenty six generations, the family has always directly managed this work with courageous and, at times, innovative decisions, but always maintaining, unaltered, a fundamental respect for tradition and for the territory in which they have operated. Tradition, passion, and intuition have been the three driving principles which have led the Marquis Antinori firm to become a leader in Italian wine. The Antinori family released their first wine under the Santa Cristina name in 1946. Since then Santa Cristina has been a byword for quality and value in Tuscany – now more so than ever since the creation of a dedicated winery in 2006.

L'Apparita is the most famous wine from Castello di Ama and is only available to specialist retailers in limited quantities. In 1985, the wine was the first pure Merlot among the Supertuscans. The expansion takes place for 18 months in barriques.
