Panettone is the typical Christmas cake that every Italian family has at home. The dough has to rise and be processed for three days before it is baked. The soft, airy cake is created through first-class craftsmanship and high-quality ingredients that come from the local area. The Pasticceria Dolceria Modicana is our regular stop when we go on holiday in Scicli in the south of Sicily. I went there with my grandfather, a captain in his nineties, and peered behind the counter into the neighboring room, where cartons of eggs, flour and honey were piled up and skillful hands were quickly forming small biscotti that filled the tables in no time. Meanwhile the master, Signor Giannone, chatted with us without stopping for a moment from his work.

The Marsala wine comes from the western lands of Sicily and its name derives from the homonymous town. The Marsala is the oldest Italian DOC wine, with an average alcohol content of about 18 degrees. The Marsala wine owes its birth to a storm which in 1773 forced John Woodhouse, a rich and famous merchant of Liverpool, to land with his ship in the port of Marsala instead of Mazara del Vallo, where he was going to close a deal. When he landed in this Sicilian town, Woodhouse went into a tavern in the port, where he tasted the âPerpetumâ, a strong local wine similar to Madeira or Porto, which were so appreciated by English people. So he decided to buy a large supply of that wine, which he wanted to sell in England. Woodhouse added an amount of alcohol to those barrels of wine, so increasing the alcohol content of that wine and ensuring its preservation up to its destination. The first expedition was an incredible success. All the barrels were sold in a few days and this convinced Woodhouse to return permanently to Sicily in order to develop a new and stable business.

Franconia has been THE home of Silvaner for almost 400 years. The white wines get their characteristic minerality paired with elegance here. The Stein Stetten steep slope has its very own microclimate. The limestone banks of shell limestone tower about 80 metres above the Main. Above this are the vineyards with slopes of up to 80%. Warm winds rise up the elongated rock face, the stony subsoil stores heat and forces the vines to root deeply. The winery is deeply rooted in its home region - around the small village of EuĂenheim am Main with its steep slopes of shell limestone, red sandstone in terraces and loamy loess. The wines have won many regional awards. Even the wooden barrels do not come from far away, but are made by local coopers from old Spessarte oak.
