Wine grape variety Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the most important white wine grape variety in the world. Firstly, because of its fame and spread, and secondly, because the best and most expensive white wines are made from Chardonnay. And from the famous single vineyards in Burgundy. The wines are relatively full-bodied and high in alcohol and harmonize very well with aging in oak barrels. The best and longest-lived Chardonnays in Burgundy have buttery, nutty aromas. Steely mineral they are in Chablis. The best Champagnes are also single varietal Chardonnay. ...

Chardonnay needs deep, chalky soils in prime locations. In Burgundy, France, the best vineyards are in Montrachet, Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne.

Typical aromas are melon, exotic fruits, ripe gooseberries. The aging in wooden barrels adds nuances of honey and nut.

SW13846 2013 Chateau la Rose Pauillac
Bordeaux - Pauillac

La Rose Pauillac was born in 1933 with the will of twenty growers coming together to make a great Pauillac. Pauillac is a small town that, since ancient times, sailors and winemakers has built on the edge of the estuary of the Gironde. In the 1960s, almost all small farms in Pauillac had joined this fine working tool and the wines reputation has spread beyond the local markets. Harvesting at La Rose Pauillac is selected according to each vineyards micro climate and the individual varietal down to the individual plot. Over time the small plots are meticulously maintained. An average benchmark of 10,000 feet per hectare perpetuates the old adage that the less place the vines have, less they produce, thus making the flagship wine, La Rose Pauillac, all the more concentrated and rich.

SW15008 2000 Moulin de Duhart
Bordeaux - Pauillac

Château Duhart-Milon’s very fine second wine is selected on the same basis as the “Grand Vin”. In general, the grapes are from the younger plots in the vineyard. Moulin de Duhart has several characteristics similar to the grand vin, but with less potential for ageing as its barrel ageing period is shorter. It should be consumed younger than its more robust counterpart.

GRAPE VARIETIES: 55 to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 to 45% Merlot

AGEING IN OAK BARRELS: 10 months in two-year-old barrels

The estate originally known simply as Chateau Milon, at one time the estate was known as the second wine of Chateau Lafite. In 1815, the Pauillac property was considered by some people as a fourth growth Bordeaux wine in the making. In those days, the wine was sold under the name of Chateau Mandavy-Milon. Between 1830 and 1840, the Casteja family became the owners of the estate from an inheritance.

The label of Duhart Milon, according to family tradition came about from an old legend written about one of their ancestors, Sir Duhart. Sir Duhart, was rumored to have been a pirate for Louis XV. He settled at Pauillac for retirement. The “pirate’s house” on the Pauillac port existed up to the 1950’s. That original building inspired the label for the Duhart-Milon wines.

The Casteja family remained in possession of Duhart Milon until the first part of the 20th century. In 1962 the Rothschild family purchased the property. The 152 hectare vineyard of Chateau Duhart Milon includes 76 hectares of vines planted to 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot.

The 12-ha estate is adjacent to fifth-growth Chateau Clerc Milon, and first growth Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, both in Pauillac. Rothschild said her company would probably use some of La Fleur Milon’s grapes to enhance production of Clerc Milon. The new property – which Rothschild says she bought because ‘we couldn’t possibly let it go’ as its borders run alongside her existing properties – joins Château Mouton Rothschild, Château d’Armailhac and Château Clerc Milon in the Baronne Philippine de Rothschild portfolio.

SW12763 1992 Chateau Lynch Moussas
5eme Grand Cru Classé - Bordeaux - Pauillac

A historic Chateau, it was named after Jean-Baptiste Lynch, mayor of Bordeaux in 1808.  When he died in 1835, Château Lynch was divided into two: Châteaux Lynch-Moussas (located on the Moussas site) and Lynch-Bages (located on the Bages site) were born. Only Château Lynch-Moussas retained the building. In 1855, it became the 5th Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc in the official classification of Bordeaux wines. In 1919, Jean Castéja, owner of Châteaux Duhart-Milon, 4th Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, Pichon-Longueville Baron, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, and Doisy-Védrines, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Sauternes and Barsac, brought Château Lynch-Moussas into the Castéja family.  With a 62-hectare vineyard in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, Château Lynch-Moussas produces grapes of excellent quality. The vineyard of Château Lynch-Moussas, composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (25%), is adjacent to numerous other Grands Crus Classés, in particular plots belonging to Châteaux Latour, Lynch-Bages, Pichon-Longueville Baron, Grand-Puy-Lacoste and, of course, Batailley, which demonstrates the quality of the soils and its production.

The estate originally known simply as Chateau Milon, at one time the estate was known as the second wine of Chateau Lafite. In 1815, the Pauillac property was considered by some people as a fourth growth Bordeaux wine in the making. SW15198 1980 Chateau Duhart Milon
4eme Grand Cru Classé - Bordeaux - Pauillac

SW18179 1986 Chateau Haut Bages Liberal Magnum
5eme Grand Cru Classé - Bordeaux - Pauillac
