What was the vintage 1949 like?

1949 a great vintage. Not as opulent as 1945 and 1947, but fragrant and elegant with enormous aromatic complexity. The 1949 have held and developed at the highest level for a long time. The best bottles were drunk in the 80's and 90's.

After such a long time, the air for very good specimens is of course extremely thin. Now you can only find really presentable individual bottles piece by piece.

Weather in the year 1949

Classic winter weather with a single late cold spell in early March. Then spring came and it got hot very quickly, especially in the southwest (Bordeaux). The first week of May was marked by strong frosty nights.

The summer was hot, sunny and exceptionally dry.

The first rains did not come until mid-September.

Good filling levels, good wine quality

The fill level of an old vintage wine reveals important information on the drinkability of the wine.
Of course, the good condition of a wine from an old vintage depends on excellent storage. Above all, the wine must not have frequently changed cellars. Ideally, the wine will have rested in one and the same wine cellar.

But also the cork that sits in each individual bottle is very important. A perfect cork has few pores and keeps the wine stable. If an inferior cork happens to have been used in a bottle, the porous surface will begin to soak up wine and allow micro-quantities of the liquid to evaporate over the decades. Poor fill levels are the result.

A poor fill level therefore also indicates a high risk that the wine bottle could soon begin to leak.

The fill levels explained:
In the bottle neck (high fill to base neck) about 2 cm is perfect for wines.
Top and upper shoulder, ([very] top shoulder), approx. 3 cm is very good for very old wines.
Medium shoulder (mid shoulder), about 4 cm is only acceptable for rare top wines and in individual cases.
Everything below the red line should not be offered any more.

Here are a few tips: in order to still have any value, the bottle must be leakproof. The wine must not be cloudy. It should be of good quality (not supermarket wine).

Search for the wine online without specifying the vintage. If it is a well-known winery, you will find the wine immediately and also the price you have to pay for the current vintage. If the current wine costs from EUR 20.00 upwards, that's a good sign.

The filling level is decisive for the value. Upper shoulder to base neck is required. Medium shoulder is only acceptable for extremely rare, already valuable wines.

It is one of a few regions in Italy that have been awarded DOCG status and shares that distinction in Piedmont with the Barolo and Barbaresco regions.

1949 Barolo Marchesi di Barolo Riserva della Castellana

Piemonte

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

1949 Marcobrunner Riesling Auslese

VdP Große Lage - Rheingau

The Macrobrunn vineyard is one of the most famous vineyards in Germany. It is a gently sloping south-facing location in the Erbach district. The name comes from the 13th century and goes back to a well between Erbach and Hattenheim. As early as 1867, the location was classified as a first class vineyard with the first location classification in the Rheingau. Today Macrobrunn is a Grand Cru in the VdP. The heavy, deep soils have a complex structure. Loess clay and calcareous soils made of marl and sand ensure a good supply of nutrients and regulate the water balance in dry periods.
