Wine vintage rating 1986

What was the vintage 1986 like?

1986 An excellent vintage Due to a cold and wet April, the vegetation period was postponed by 2 weeks. From May to September the weather remained warm and dry with favorable water stress for the vines. Merlot could be harvested in early October, Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-October.
A fabulous 1986 Mouton Rothschild got 100/100 points from Robert Parker, but after its youth phase the tannic wine closed. He may still be too young today. The tannic 1986 wines could also be stored further.

Weather in the year 1986

Spring of the year came very late and was quite cool.

Only the beginning of summer in June brought about a heat wave. August and September were cool in the north and very warm in the south.

October turned hot and dry.

Good filling levels, good wine quality

The fill level of an old vintage wine reveals important information on the drinkability of the wine.
Of course, the good condition of a wine from an old vintage depends on excellent storage. Above all, the wine must not have frequently changed cellars. Ideally, the wine will have rested in one and the same wine cellar.

But also the cork that sits in each individual bottle is very important. A perfect cork has few pores and keeps the wine stable. If an inferior cork happens to have been used in a bottle, the porous surface will begin to soak up wine and allow micro-quantities of the liquid to evaporate over the decades. Poor fill levels are the result.

A poor fill level therefore also indicates a high risk that the wine bottle could soon begin to leak.

The fill levels explained:
In the bottle neck (high fill to base neck) about 2 cm is perfect for wines.
Top and upper shoulder, ([very] top shoulder), approx. 3 cm is very good for very old wines.
Medium shoulder (mid shoulder), about 4 cm is only acceptable for rare top wines and in individual cases.
Everything below the red line should not be offered any more.

Wine rating

Do you have a 1986 vintage in your wine cellar and would you like to know how much it is worth?

Here are a few tips: in order to still have any value, the bottle must be leakproof. The wine must not be cloudy. It should be of good quality (not supermarket wine).

Search for the wine online without specifying the vintage. If it is a well-known winery, you will find the wine immediately and also the price you have to pay for the current vintage. If the current wine costs from EUR 20.00 upwards, that's a good sign.

The filling level is decisive for the value. Upper shoulder to base neck is required. Medium shoulder is only acceptable for extremely rare, already valuable wines.
SW13598 1986 Chateau Crabitey
Bordeaux - Graves

The classical dry red wine comes from the appellation Graves, Pessac Leognan in Médoc. Graves (from French: gravelly land) is an important subregion of the Bordeaux wine region. Graves is situated on the left bank of the Garonne river, in the upstream part of the region, southeast of the city Bordeaux. The name Graves derives from ist intensely gravelly soil. The soil is the result of glaciers from the Ice Age, which also left white quartz deposits that can still be found in the soil of some of the top winemaking estates. Typical for the left bank wines (Médoc) is the blend of grapes with Cabernet Sauvignon as the predominant grape. The others are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

SW18261 1986 Chateau de Fieuzal
Grand Cru Classé - Bordeaux - Pessac-Léognan
The respect that Fieuzal has for its soil goes back over 400 years, when it was still cultivated by a handful of winegrowers. As the terroir grew in prestige, it was named ‘Fieuzal’ in 1864 after ‘Lovely Fieuzal’, the last descendant of the Fieuzal family. The legendary 1893 vintage of Fieuzal stood on the table of Pope Leo XIII in the Vatican and its red wine was named Grand Cru Classé in 1959 and is now considered one of the best Grand Crus of Bordeaux. Protected by 30 hectares of forest and extensive hedges, the Fieuzal vineyard is divided into 74 individual plots with 6 grape varieties. The pebbles that give the designation ‘Graves’ its name and the sand that flows between them provide the roots of the vines with rich minerals and have a remarkable ability to retain freshness.
