Wine vintage rating 1986
1986 An excellent vintage Due to a cold and wet April, the vegetation period was postponed by 2 weeks. From May to September the weather remained warm and dry with favorable water stress for the vines. Merlot could be harvested in early October, Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-October.

Good filling levels, good wine quality
Of course, the good condition of a wine from an old vintage depends on excellent storage. Above all, the wine must not have frequently changed cellars. Ideally, the wine will have rested in one and the same wine cellar.
But also the cork that sits in each individual bottle is very important. A perfect cork has few pores and keeps the wine stable. If an inferior cork happens to have been used in a bottle, the porous surface will begin to soak up wine and allow micro-quantities of the liquid to evaporate over the decades. Poor fill levels are the result.
A poor fill level therefore also indicates a high risk that the wine bottle could soon begin to leak.
The fill levels explained:
In the bottle neck (high fill to base neck) about 2 cm is perfect for wines.
Top and upper shoulder, ([very] top shoulder), approx. 3 cm is very good for very old wines.
Medium shoulder (mid shoulder), about 4 cm is only acceptable for rare top wines and in individual cases.
Everything below the red line should not be offered any more.

The classical dry red wine comes from the appellation Graves, Pessac Leognan in Médoc. Graves (from French: gravelly land) is an important subregion of the Bordeaux wine region. Graves is situated on the left bank of the Garonne river, in the upstream part of the region, southeast of the city Bordeaux. The name Graves derives from ist intensely gravelly soil. The soil is the result of glaciers from the Ice Age, which also left white quartz deposits that can still be found in the soil of some of the top winemaking estates. Typical for the left bank wines (Médoc) is the blend of grapes with Cabernet Sauvignon as the predominant grape. The others are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

Château Lamothe-Bergeron owes part of its name and its reputation to the prestige of the agronomist Jacques de Bergeron. From 1796, this former parliamentarian dispatched to his vines by the French Revolution devoted himself to experimentation and carried out numerous trials in vine cultivation. From his father he inherited Château La Mothe, which in the Middle Ages had been the seat of a domain known by the name of Cussac. In the 2000s,the estate passed into the hands of Crédit Agricole. In 2009, Cognac H. Mounier and Cognac Hardy acquired the estate.

In the 1950s, the Clos des Menuts only covered one hectare of vineyards. Today it extends to over 25 hectares, not far from the historic town of Saint Emilion and located mainly in the western part of the municipality. This wine is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The high proportion of Merlot is a consequence of the iron-containing sand-clay soil and can be compared to Pomerol.

Château Camensac borders on the Saint-Julien appellation, in the commune of Saint-Laurent-de-Médoc, surrounded by other excellent classed growths such as La Tour Carnet and Belgrave. Camensac means on the water's way, and comes from the words "camens", which means path or way and "ac", which means water in local dialect. In 1965 it was bought by the Forner brothers, who also own the well-known Marques de Carceres bodega in Rioja. The two brothers replanted most of the 85 hectares of vineyards, the balance now being 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. They also renovated the cuverie and the cellars and hired the renowned Bordeaux oenologist Emile Peynaud as a consultant. he Merlaut family acquired Camensac in time for the 2005 vintage. Céline Villars-Loubet who owns Chasse-Spleen and her husband, Jean-Pierre Foubet are now in charge of the estate.

The classical dry red wine comes from the appellation Pauillac in Médoc. The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

The name of the property originates from its geographic location, the “Bages” plateau between Pauillac and Saint Julien, and the first owners of the estate: the Libéral family who were wine brokers, who sold the harvests to the Netherlands and Belgium. Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a 5th Classified Growth in 1855. The vineyard spreads over 30 hectares and half of its area is located right next to Château Latour and the other half behind Château Pichon Baron, on the heights of the »Bages" area, a large plateau, South of Pauillac. In 1960, the Cruse family, owner of Château Pontet Canet, another 5th Classified Growth in Pauillac, acquired the estate. Today, the property is run by Claire Villars Lurton.
