The wine-growing region covers around two-thirds of the Gironde department (with the exception of the southernmost area and the coastal strip, where no vines are grown), spanning 105 by 130 kilometres and covering a total vineyard area of 113,000 hectares. The climate, influenced by the proximity of the Atlantic and the numerous waterways, is extremely favourable for viticulture. Summers are neither too dry nor too hot, autumns are sunny and winters are mild. The predominantly barren and stony soil forces the vine roots to dig down to a depth of ten metres to find water. This enables the vines to cope better with both periods of drought and heavy rain (thanks to the drainage provided by the gravelly soil). The stony soil also acts as a heat reservoir. Château La Grave à Pomerol covers 8 hectares of vines in coarse gravel soil. Château Corbin is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Emilion. The fundations of the Château date back to the 15th century, and according to legend, Corbin was the focal point of a stronghold that belonged to the Black Prince. Built in the middle of the 19th century, Corbin was purchased in 1924 by the great-grandparents of the current owners. Since 1999, the estate is managed by Anabelle Cruse-Bardinet, a Bordeaux University oenology graduate, who represents the 4th generation of the family.
