Wine vintage rating 1994

What was the vintage 1994 like?

1994 Wines from high-class wineries hardly fail anymore. There is always something worth recommending. Some wines are still too young today, but there is no consensus among wine experts. You can easily find the opposite opinion on many wine reviews.
The weather during the growing season was excellent, being warm and dry. Then, in September, heavy rains set in in France and Italy, necessitating strict selection during the harvest. Cabernet Franc matured very well and the early ripening grape variety Merlot had an advantage. In contrast, in 1994 Lafite Rothschild completely dispensed with Merlot / Cabernet Franc and gave his wine 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot.
In Piedmont, 1994 was the third consecutive year with excellent summers and long rains during September.

Weather in the year 1994

The year started with a lot of precipitation as snow and as rain. Spring was warmer than average.

In Bordeaux, spring frosts resulted in low yields. Warm to hot weather prevailed from May to August, followed by prolonged rain and storms.

However, the autumn remained mild overall.

Good filling levels, good wine quality

The fill level of an old vintage wine reveals important information on the drinkability of the wine.
Of course, the good condition of a wine from an old vintage depends on excellent storage. Above all, the wine must not have frequently changed cellars. Ideally, the wine will have rested in one and the same wine cellar.

But also the cork that sits in each individual bottle is very important. A perfect cork has few pores and keeps the wine stable. If an inferior cork happens to have been used in a bottle, the porous surface will begin to soak up wine and allow micro-quantities of the liquid to evaporate over the decades. Poor fill levels are the result.

A poor fill level therefore also indicates a high risk that the wine bottle could soon begin to leak.

The fill levels explained:
In the bottle neck (high fill to base neck) about 2 cm is perfect for wines.
Top and upper shoulder, ([very] top shoulder), approx. 3 cm is very good for very old wines.
Medium shoulder (mid shoulder), about 4 cm is only acceptable for rare top wines and in individual cases.
Everything below the red line should not be offered any more.

Wine rating

Do you have a 1994 vintage in your wine cellar and would you like to know how much it is worth?

Here are a few tips: in order to still have any value, the bottle must be leakproof. The wine must not be cloudy. It should be of good quality (not supermarket wine).

Search for the wine online without specifying the vintage. If it is a well-known winery, you will find the wine immediately and also the price you have to pay for the current vintage. If the current wine costs from EUR 20.00 upwards, that's a good sign.

The filling level is decisive for the value. Upper shoulder to base neck is required.
SW3145l 1994 Barolo Aldo Conterno Bussia Soprana
Piemonte - Barolo
In the case of antique wines, we usually deal with single bottles or small stocks of old wines. The many Barolo wines in our cellar come from various vintages and from 30-40 different wineries. These 30-40 wine producers are among the best in Piedmont. Why this is the case can be seen on the spot. If you drive up into the hilly landscape of the DOC Barolo, where a narrow road winds between the vineyards, a remarkable spectacle begins between the municipalities of Monforte and Barolo. Along the roadside, at the small junctions, there is a dense line of signs indicating the access roads to the wineries. And there they are, lined up next to each other, all the Barolo producers of distinction whose bottles have found a place in our wine cellar. Parusso, Prunotto, Beni di Batasiolo, Ceretto, Conterno, Clerico, Seghesio, Sandrone and on and on. We drive through the hills of Bussia Soprana, frazione of Monforte d'Alba, one of the best vineyards in Barolo. The important winegrowers have their share of the best vineyards here. And Aldo Conterno is the star of Bussia Soprana!
