Wine vintage rating 1998

What was the vintage 1998 like?

1998 wines between grandiose and very good. The high-quality wines can be stored for a long time. Wine enthusiasts can drink their way through different wine styles with the 1998 vintage. The best red wines have a rich, distinctive aroma at a high level. Depending on the drinking time, i.e. age, many wines appear very differently. It is best to store several bottles for different occasions.
Very good champagne vintage due to late-ripening grapes with high acid levels. Very good vintage also in Tuscany. Consistently warm, dry summer weather until the grape harvest, which proceeds undisturbed. The best Chianti and of course the Brunello di Montalcino from old nobility are dense, concentrated wines with lots of fruit and power.

Weather in the year 1998

The year 1998 was the warmest year since regular temperature measurements or recordings began (thus replacing the previous year). After a series of storms, January became unusually mild and temperatures climbed to over 20°C in February.

The summer brought about several heat waves and became hot and dry.

At the beginning of September there was heavy rain in many places.

Good filling levels, good wine quality

The fill level of an old vintage wine reveals important information on the drinkability of the wine.
Of course, the good condition of a wine from an old vintage depends on excellent storage. Above all, the wine must not have frequently changed cellars. Ideally, the wine will have rested in one and the same wine cellar.

But also the cork that sits in each individual bottle is very important. A perfect cork has few pores and keeps the wine stable. If an inferior cork happens to have been used in a bottle, the porous surface will begin to soak up wine and allow micro-quantities of the liquid to evaporate over the decades. Poor fill levels are the result.

A poor fill level therefore also indicates a high risk that the wine bottle could soon begin to leak.

The fill levels explained:
In the bottle neck (high fill to base neck) about 2 cm is perfect for wines.
Top and upper shoulder, ([very] top shoulder), approx. 3 cm is very good for very old wines.
Medium shoulder (mid shoulder), about 4 cm is only acceptable for rare top wines and in individual cases.
Everything below the red line should not be offered any more.

Wine rating

Do you have a 1998 vintage in your wine cellar and would you like to know how much it is worth?

Here are a few tips: in order to still have any value, the bottle must be leakproof. The wine must not be cloudy. It should be of good quality (not supermarket wine).

Search for the wine online without specifying the vintage. If it is a well-known winery, you will find the wine immediately and also the price you have to pay for the current vintage. If the current wine costs from EUR 20.00 upwards, that's a good sign.

The filling level is decisive for the value. Upper shoulder to base neck is required.
SW15577 1998 Old John Marsala Superiore Riserva
Marsala

The Marsala wine comes from the western lands of Sicily and its name derives from the homonymous town. The Marsala is the oldest Italian DOC wine, with an average alcohol content of about 18 degrees. The Marsala wine owes its birth to a storm which in 1773 forced John Woodhouse, a rich and famous merchant of Liverpool, to land with his ship in the port of Marsala instead of Mazara del Vallo, where he was going to close a deal. When he landed in this Sicilian town, Woodhouse went into a tavern in the port, where he tasted the ‘Perpetum’, a strong local wine similar to Madeira or Porto, which were so appreciated by English people. So he decided to buy a large supply of that wine, which he wanted to sell in England.  Woodhouse added an amount of alcohol to those barrels of wine, so increasing the alcohol content of that wine and ensuring its preservation up to its destination. The first expedition was an incredible success. All the barrels were sold in a few days and this convinced Woodhouse to return permanently to Sicily in order to develop a new and stable business.

SW18982 1998 Barolo Terredavino
Piemonte

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

SW17330 1998 Hermitage Nobles Rives
Grand Cru - Côtes du Rhône - Hermitage

Hermitage is one of the famous Grand Cru on the Côte du Rhône. The very elegant Syrah offers dark berry, spicy aromas with strong tannins and is very long-lasting.

The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. Despite its small size, the Hermitage is geologically very diverse. In the highest, western part, the soil consists of granite, which weathers into fine clay. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the Rhône had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. The name of the extremely long-lasting red wine Hermitage goes back to a hermitage founded in 1224 (Hermitage = hermit).

SW14269 1998 Chateau Belair
1er Grand Cru Classé - Bordeaux - Saint Émilion

Quality close to perfection. Château Belair is a 1er Grand Cru Classé and neighbour of Château Ausone. It has an extraordinary history: since the 15th century it belonged to the influential Canolles family, which even managed to survive the expropriations of the French Revolution. In the 19th century, Château Bel Air was one of the most sought-after estates of all, when a change of ownership and the phylloxera disaster destroyed the estate's pre-eminence. Of course, it always remained at 1er Grand Cru level. In 2008, Belair was bought by the Moueix wine dynasty (Pétrus and many others) and has since been linked to Château Magdelaine.
