Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo occurs only in northern Italian Piedmont and is pressed there varietal to Barolo, Barbaresco and some specialties such as Gattinara, Ghemme etc.
A striking feature of the Nebbiolo grape are its fine tannins (tannins), which characterize the taste of the wine pressed from it. The characteristic of the wines from Nebbiolo is the fine bouquet: rose, violet, tar, liquorice, truffle. The wines are very long-lived.
Originally, the wines from the grape variety were also called Nebbiolo. Today, Nebbiolo is the more accessible wine than a Barolo or Barbaresco, often with beautiful, fine elegance.
Nebbiolo (or in old spelling sometimes Nebiolo) is very old and is one of the noblest grape varieties in Italy. Presumably, Pliny the Elder already knew an ancestor of her in antiquity.
The special position of Nebbiolo is evidenced by a statute of the municipality of La Morra from 1431. In it, everyone is threatened with a high fine and, in case of recurrence, the loss of the right hand, which cuts off only a single Nebbiolo grape from the vineyard.

SW15784 2018 Barolo Giacomo Ascheri
Piemonte

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

Piemonte - Alba

The Nebbiolo grapes for this wine come from vineyards located in Barolo villages, at 200 to 300 ft. above sea level. The average age of the vines is 50 years and they are grown on a southern exposure in calcareous clay soils, at a density of about 5,000 plants per hectare. After harvesting, the grapes are pressed and the must is fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks after a short period in contact with dry ice to increase complexity and aroma. Skin maceration takes place over 15 days, assuring good color and body. The wine spends 36 months in oak Slavonia casks, and then six months in bottles before shipping. It is presented to the consumer with the following organoleptic characteristics: Color: garnet red with orange tinges. Fragrance: full, ethereal, lasting with the fragrance of flowers and fruits amalgamated with the scent of spices and essences. Taste: dry, intense, robust but velvety and harmonic. SW16765 2000 Barbaresco Riserva Allini
Piemonte - Barbaresco

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barbaresco DOC in Northern Italy, the important wine region of Piedmont. Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Piedmont. It is a wine of extremely ancient origin and was mentioned by Livy in his monumental History of Rome. It was only toward the middle of the 19th century, however, that production was begun of a dry type of wine, which brought out all of Barbaresco's extraordinary qualities. Professor Domizio Cavazza, a noted enologist, introduced new vinification techniques and, in 1894, founded a cooperative winery exclusively dedicated to the production of Barbaresco. Barbaresco is 100% made with the Nebbiolo grape. The dry red wine is produced in the Piedmont region in an area of the Langhe immediately to the east of Alba and specifically in the comunes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive plus that area of the frazione San Rocco. The soils of Barbaresco zone are composed primarily of calcareous marl dating from the Tortonian epoch.

SW17296 1976 Inferno Valtellina Superiore
Lombardia

The Lombardy region lies in North-Central Italy, between Piedmont to the west and Veneto to the east. It is not known, at least worldwide, for winemaking. But that doesn’t mean it lacks tradition or quality – in fact, production dates back to early Greek settlements on the Po River. And more recently, Franciacorta has become Italy’s finest producer of sparkling wine. The main red grape here is Nebbiolo. The very same noble variety of the Piedmont, of King Barolo and Queen Barbaresco. How it came to be in these far reaches is unclear, but it thrives just the same, albeit differently. The wines are aged for a number of years in large, old oak followed by a number of years in bottle before release.

With the 1976 Inferno Valtellina Superiore, comes a personal present meant for a person who is very special to you.

We deliver the 1976 Inferno Valtellina Superiore with the following guaranties and wine documents.

SW16726 1995 Barolo Fratelli Dogliani La Morra
Piemonte

La Morra is one of the famous municipalities in the Barolo area.

SW17120 1987 Nebbiolo delle Langhe Marchesi di Barolo
Piemonte

The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de MaulĂ©vrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. Since 1970, the Castello has been under local ownership. The winery estate, which is located at the center of Barolo, presently belongs to the Abbona family, which purchased in the late 19th century.  The original and distinguished wines produced by Marchesi di Barolo are characterized by a number of highly prestigious native vines and a unique soil composition, with amalgams of clay, limestone marl, blueish marl, tuff, sandstone and sand. In order to better define and enhance their different characteristics, the most prestigious historical crus are made from a single variety, and individually aged and bottled.

SW16282 1993 Barolo Fratelli Giacosa Vigna Colonnello
Piemonte - Barbaresco

Barolo is the most important wine in Italy. However, the growing area around the town of Barolo has a typical Piedmont characteristic. The 1,300-hectare wine region is shared by almost as many winegrowers and wineries. Wineries with 3-4 hectares of vineyards are not uncommon. Many of the Barolo winegrowers do not bottle themselves or only grow wine on the side. And, of course, there are prime locations and less interesting vineyards. Therefore, of the approximately 1,000 wineries of DOC Barolo, only about 15-20 belong to the serious Barolo producers. In Monforte d'Alba in the Bussia Soprana area there is Vigna Colonello. This is one of the best parts of Piedmont. If there is an increase for the very good vineyards of Bussia Soprana, then the Vigna Colonello vineyard is one of them. Here the sunlight is optimal, the soil composition of the grey-blue shimmering marl ideal for storing heat.

SW14745 1983 Barbaresco Carlo Boffa

SW13255 1996 Barolo Sorì Ginestra Conterno Fantino

Monforte is one of the most importants comunes (municipality) for the production of Barolo.
