Spirits and Fortified Wines - Whisky, Port, Rhum
The world of spirits is vast. We specialize in wines - the selection of spirits is small but of good quality.
Important! Because we specialize in old vintages: only port wine carries a historically correct vintage as a vintage port. Whisky, cognac, armagnac, fortified dessert wines such as Banyuls and Rivesaltes or even grappa are classic blends from different vintages. At some point some producers released vintage spirits as a marketing niche. That's not our issue.

The Marsala wine comes from the western lands of Sicily and its name derives from the homonymous town. The Marsala is the oldest Italian DOC wine, with an average alcohol content of about 18 degrees. The Marsala wine owes its birth to a storm which in 1773 forced John Woodhouse, a rich and famous merchant of Liverpool, to land with his ship in the port of Marsala instead of Mazara del Vallo, where he was going to close a deal. When he landed in this Sicilian town, Woodhouse went into a tavern in the port, where he tasted the ‘Perpetum’, a strong local wine similar to Madeira or Porto, which were so appreciated by English people. So he decided to buy a large supply of that wine, which he wanted to sell in England. Woodhouse added an amount of alcohol to those barrels of wine, so increasing the alcohol content of that wine and ensuring its preservation up to its destination. The first expedition was an incredible success. All the barrels were sold in a few days and this convinced Woodhouse to return permanently to Sicily in order to develop a new and stable business.

Ports Dow’s LBV, Late Bottled Vintage, is full-bodied, rich but perfectly balanced with soft peppery tannins and with a fine acidity that ensure perfect balance on the palate. The classic Dow’s dry finish is always present in the house’s LBV; it is one of the finest LBV Ports available. For over two centuries the name of DOW has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. The story of Dow’s began in 1798 when Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, set up in London from where he imported wine from his native country. He married an Englishwoman and was rapidly assimilated into London society where his business acumen led to a fine reputation for his wines.

Port is the name given to a sweet wine originating exclusively from the Douro Valley. The name comes from the port city of Porto, from which port was shipped mainly to England from the end of the 17th century.
In the 17th century, the idea was developed to stop the fermentation of the wine by adding 80 percent wine distillate. This stopped the sugar from fermenting further and the wine retained its sweetness. Through this so-called fortification, port has an alcohol content of between 19 and 22 percent by volume and is more durable.
After the Tawny Port has been stored for a good two years under exclusion of air in the large barrel, it is transferred to a small wooden barrel, the pipa, with a capacity of 550 litres. Here it breathes (oxidises) more strongly and changes its colour to tawny. The contact with the wood also changes the taste to aromas of nuts, dried fruit, etc. Standard tawnies are filtered and bottled after 6-7 years.
Port is usually available as a vintageless fortified wine. Only exceptionally good vintages, such as 1966, are declared as vintage Port and allow the production of a Tawny Port or even a Vintage Port, i.e. a vintage Port.

Vintage Calvados Lot No. 101155. Calvados is the legendary fruit brandy made from cider and always comes from Normandy - here from Isigny le Buat. The older the Calvados is, the more velvety and aromatic its taste is. The color is then amber to cognac brown. The age designations are: VO or vieille réserve (four years), VSOP (more than five years) and Napoléon or X.O. (Extra Old, more than six years) and this makes it clear that Calvados actually comes from a specific vintage. However, such vintage bottlings, such as Cognac or Armagnac, are more common these days.
