Wine 1992
The year 1992 brought changeable weather between humid and cool and warm with rain and hot and dry. The vintage demanded a lot from the winegrowers to avert damage to the ripening grapes in time. The best wines of 1992 tend to be light and elegant. To hold an old wine from the 1992 vintage in one's hands today, to open it and drink it, is immensely fascinating. It is like a miracle that the wine bottle could last so long. ... And yet it's not completely random. These wines were kept specifically. What do people keep in their care for such a long time? Personal mementos and valuable things. When we take over wine cellars, we often experience that they are considered a treasure trove. The wines deserve respect and want to be guarded with care. Which wines have been chosen to be stored for such a long time? Of course, it is particularly high quality wines that are found in wine collections. Grand Cru, Barolo, Brunello are among them. Wines from famous wineries, each with its own story worth telling.

A fine Gewürztraminer from the Freinsheimer Oschelskopf in the Palatinate. The Traminer originally comes from South Tyrol, elements of the Urtraminer can be found in Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Gewürztraminer is one of the so-called aroma grape varieties. The nose is greeted by powerful and expansive aromas that strongly underline the varietal aromas of roses, lilacs, white flowers and honeydew melon. The Gewürztraminer grape variety needs the best locations to show its best sides and a fine rose scent. Alsace, the French border region to Germany, is known for its tasty Gewürztraminer.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

Château Beau-Site is said to be one of the oldest properties in Saint-Estèphe. Its name, 'Beau-Site', derives from its dominant position that allows it to dominate the entire vineyard and enjoy a magnificent panorama, one of the most beautiful in the appellation. The history of Chateau Beau-Site has been linked to the Castéja family for 350 years. As early as 1600-1650, Jehan de Castéja, originally from the Landes, bought his first land in Pauillac. Château Beau-Site was recognised as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Ideally located in Saint-Estèphe, on the hillock of Saint-Corbian, facing the estuary and close to Château Calon-Ségur (Grand Cru Classé in 1855), the terroir of Château Beau-Site is remarkable thanks to its qualitative and complementary soils: gravel, sandy gravel, Eocene limestone, sandy colluvium, Oligocene, marl and clay. Planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), Petit Verdot (3%) and Cabernet Franc (2%), the vineyard, with an average age of 45 years, spreads wonderfully over an area of 40 hectares.

A historic Chateau, it was named after Jean-Baptiste Lynch, mayor of Bordeaux in 1808. When he died in 1835, Château Lynch was divided into two: Châteaux Lynch-Moussas (located on the Moussas site) and Lynch-Bages (located on the Bages site) were born. Only Château Lynch-Moussas retained the building. In 1855, it became the 5th Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc in the official classification of Bordeaux wines. In 1919, Jean Castéja, owner of Châteaux Duhart-Milon, 4th Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, Pichon-Longueville Baron, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, and Doisy-Védrines, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Sauternes and Barsac, brought Château Lynch-Moussas into the Castéja family. With a 62-hectare vineyard in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, Château Lynch-Moussas produces grapes of excellent quality. The vineyard of Château Lynch-Moussas, composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (25%), is adjacent to numerous other Grands Crus Classés, in particular plots belonging to Châteaux Latour, Lynch-Bages, Pichon-Longueville Baron, Grand-Puy-Lacoste and, of course, Batailley, which demonstrates the quality of the soils and its production.

The respect Fieuzal has for its soil goes back over 400 years, when it was farmed by a handful of winegrowers. As the terroir gained prestige, it was named "Fieuzal" in 1864, after "Lovely Fieuzal", the last descendant of the Fieuzal family. Fieuzal's legendary 1893 vintage was on the table of Pope Leo XIII at the Vatican and its red wine was named Grand Cru Classé in 1959 and is now considered one of the best Grand Crus of Bordeaux. Protected by 30 hectares of woodland and extensive hedgerows, Fieuzal's vineyard is divided into 74 individual plots of 6 grape varieties. The pebbles that give the "Graves" appellation its name and the sand that flows between them provide the roots of the vines with rich minerals and have a remarkable ability to preserve freshness.

The famous vineyard for red wine (98% of the vineyard area is planted with Pinot Noir) consists of the vineyards of the mountain of the same name: Corton. The soil consists of a thin layer of brown limestone pebbles. The hilltop is not suitable for viticulture, but is covered by a piece of forest that offers the underlying vineyards ideal protection against frost. Emperor Charlemagne (742-814) donated the upper part of it to Saulieu Abbey in 775 as compensation for the destruction caused by the Saracens. Corton is now divided among many individual owners with plots of 1-4 hectares. There are 2 Grand Cru and 14 1er Cru sites.

The classical dry red wine comes from the appellation Margaux in Médoc.
Chateau Prieure Lichine started out as a priory for Benedictine monks in Cantenac. Like many estates during the French Revolution, Prieure Lichine was seized, split up and sold. In 1789 parts of Prieure Lichine were bought by numerous surrounding Châteaux in the Margaux appellation. Since that time, Chateau Prieure Lichine has sold wine under several different names including La Prieuré and Prieuré-Cantenac.
In 1951 the noted author and merchant Alexis Lichine arrived in the Medoc to buy Chateau Prieure, it was down to only 4 hectares. Today Chateau Prieure Lichine is expanded to 77 hectares of vines in their Margaux vineyards. This region has the thinnest soil in Medoc with the highest proportion of gravel that allows the soil to drain very well.

For a long time it was a joint property with the neighbouring Château Haut-Batailley. In 1942, it was divided in an inheritance between the brothers Marcel and Francois Borie. The larger part of Château Batailley then came into the possession of the Castéja family empire in 1969. In the Bordeaux classification of 1855, it was ranked fifth (Cinquième Cru Classé) as a single estate. The vineyards with 57 hectares of vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (5%) and are located on the south-western plateau of Pauillac.

Corton is a Grand Cru vineyard and appellation shared between the three villages of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. The appellation covers the lower parts of the Corton hill. Hospices de Beaune is a medieval hospital foundation and one of the most prestigious events in Burgundy: every year since 1851, on the third Sunday in November, the world-famous charity wine auction "Hospices de Beaune" has been held at the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune. The magnificent Gothic building complex of Hospices de Beaune with its decorative multi-coloured tiled roofs was built in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor. To secure the financial future of the institution, Rolin donated several vineyards to the Hôtel-Dieu. In doing so, he laid the foundation stone of a donation tradition that is still vital today.
The Hôtel-Dieu vineyard now has 60 hectares of vines, 85 percent of which are Premiers Crus and Grands Crus; 50 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir, the rest with Chardonnay.
