Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG for dry red wine in the Italian region of Tuscany. An important aspect of the quality lies in the very special climate, as it is warmer and drier than in the nearby Chianti areas and the nights are cooler. Historically the name should be given only to the municipalities of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, that were part of the ancient "Florentine Military League of Chianti" whose symbol was a black rooster. More recently, due to the regulation of the wine's designation, "Chianti" is the area within the three old municipalities of the Chianti League and the area to San Casciano and Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa, Greve and part of Barberino Val D'Elsa, and the Sienese areas of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi. Fontalloro is the most representative expression of Fèlsina’s Sangiovese. Felsina was founded in 1966 by Domenico Poggiali. The property extends at least 500 hectares with 90 hectares under vine. The many different vineyards feature very specific microclimates, each one unlike any other. Altitudes vary from 350 to 420 meters above sea level, with soils that range from clay to alberese, rich in minerals and fossils. Fontalloro grapes come from vineyards straddling the border between Chianti Classico and the Chianti Colli Senesi denomination. The grapes are influenced by diverse soil compositions: on the Chianti Classico side the soil is stony and calcareous; on the Crete Senesi side the soil is sandy, loamy and silty with pebbles and marine sediments. The Gran Selezione San Lorenzo combines the best grapes from the four individual layers of Castello di Ama and is extremely durable. Extraordinarily elegant, well structured with fine fruit. 80% Sangiovese and a total of 20% Merlot and Malvasia Nera were aged in barriques for 12 months.

In the year 1877, the cousins Leopoldo and Ilario Ruffino  developing their own small winery in a town near Florence, Pontassieve.  Ruffino become popular for their balanced and clean wines, embracing the motto “Here We Make Ideal Wine.” The status also of Ruffino family was also established firmly both internationally and nationally when its own Ruffino Chianti won the gold medal during the Milan Wine exhibition in the year 1881, and a consolation prize during the Nice Exhibition in 1884 and another one gold medal in Antwerp Exhibition in year 1885. The vineyards are on one slope only and are exposed to North-East/South-West at 240 m altitude asl. Recognition of DOCG status came in 1980. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano production zone comprises the land belonging to the municipal area of Montepulciano in the province of Siena, a particularly favourable location on the hilly ridge between Val di Chiana and Val d’Orcia.
