Wine 2014
The quality of the 2014 vintage in France resulted from the perfect late summer, which compensated for the changeability of the previous months and allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly. In Italy, it was the other way round, so to speak. The best wines were produced where the grape harvest took place before the heavy rain in autumn. When sudden rain threatens the quality of the grapes ... at the end of the ripening period, the early-ripening grape varieties and the warmer vineyards have an advantage. In Tuscany this was the case in 2014 for Brunello di Montalcino and in Piedmont for Barbaresco (both warmer and earlier ripening). One should bear in mind that individual weather events, such as rain, frost or hail, are usually local. This means that individual wineries or regions are affected and others are not.

Saint-Émilion is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for wine in the Bordeaux wine region of France, where it is situated in the Libourne subregion on the right bank of the Dordogne. The wines of Saint-Émilion are typically blended from different grape varieties, the three main ones being Merlot (60% of the blend), Cabernet Franc (nearly 30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (around 10%). Côtes de Bourg is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for Bordeaux wine situated around the small town of Bourg-sur-Gironde near Bordeaux, France. The first vineyards in the area were founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Bourg was a major port for wine and the vineyards developed at the same tempo as the estuary traffic. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Some Chateaux still use Malbec as part of the blend. The vine has been established in le Bourgeais for centuries and the current varieties have been selected because of their performance in relation to the soil. The Côtes de Bourg are characterized by the diversity and richness of their soils.
Although the Côtes de Bourg is composed of mainly clay and limestone soils, their make-up is so rich that there is a veritable mosaic of sand and gravel in the area around Pugnac. Three types are predominant. Firstly, the Sienna-red Quaternary alluvium that is quite specific to the region and situated more on the heights: Merlot and Malbec are widely cultivated. Merlot and Cabernet are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone.

Burgundy wine (French: Bourgogne) is wine made in the Burgundy region in eastern France. The most famous wines produced here - those commonly referred to as Burgundies - are red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. The Côte de Beaune area is the southern part of the Côte d'Or, the limestone ridge that is home to the great names of Burgundy wine. The Côte de Beaune starts between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune, and extends southwards for about 25km to the River Dheune.

The classical dry red wine comes from the appellation Saint-Estephe in Médoc. Saint-Estèphe is best known as the northernmost, and one of the four major wine growing appellations of the Médoc. The area is separated from Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac to the south by the Jalle de Breuil stream and ist vineyards cover around 12 km² on the banks of the Garonne. The layers of gravel on top of clay lead to comparatively poor drainage, and the harvest is one of the latest of the whole region, although this water retention can be of use in vintages of low rainfall. Apart from the famous Grand Cru Classés there is a particularly high concentration of very good Cru Bourgeois in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the plateau south and west of the village.

In the 1950s, the Clos des Menuts only covered one hectare of vineyards. Today it extends to over 25 hectares, not far from the historic town of Saint Emilion and located mainly in the western part of the municipality. This wine is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The high proportion of Merlot is a consequence of the iron-containing sand-clay soil and can be compared to Pomerol.

The hilltops of Sancerre vineyards spread through 14 villages. The two grape varieties in Sancerre are the Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinot Noir. They have gained the AOC status in 1936. The red and rosé wines, made from the noble Pinot Noir, followed in 1959 when they were awarded the AOC accreditation.
The red wines illustrate the virtues of Pinot Noir. They offer a bouquets of cherry and morellos.
In the 12th century, cultivation of vines was given added impetus through the combined efforts of the Augustine monks in St-Satur and the ruling counts of Sancerre. At that time Sancerre was famous for its red wine, produced predominantly from the Pinot Noir grape, and exported from the region along the Loire. This wine is often mentioned in accounts of life at the royal court. The famous wine of Sancerre was, in the opinion of Duke Jean de Berry, indeed the finest wine to be found in the entire kingdom.

The Volnay appellation, named after the place of the same name, with 226 hectares of vineyards is located in the Côte de Beaune area on the Burgundian Côte d'Or between the municipalities of Pommard and Meursault. Red wines are produced almost exclusively from Pinot Noir with proportions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault, which are among the best in Burgundy. The Cistercians already owned vineyards here in the 14th century and were very popular with the Dukes of Burgundy, who had a castle here at the time. Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) begins his famous book on Burgundy wines with a Latin hymn of praise for the wines of Volnay, in which he describes them as "partridge coloured" and the best wines of the Côte de Beaune. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the wine from this commune was one of the favorites of the Bourbons and the aristocracy as a whole.

Château Grand-Puy Ducasse was classified 5th growth in the famous 1855 classification. Three large plots in the best parts of Pauillac form the Pauillac, Grand Cru Classé en 1855 vineyard of this classified growth. This unusual configuration is a direct inheritance from the estate’s founder, Pierre
Ducasse, an eminent lawyer. In the 18th century he gave a single name to a fine vineyard holding, which was put together through inheritance and purchases. When he died in 1797, his son, Pierre, inherited a 60-hectare exploitation, named Ducasse-Grand-Puy-Artigues-Arnaud, of which two
third were planted with vines. The estate was classified in 1855, under the name of Artigues Arnaud.
The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.
