Wine 1998
The year 1998 was mainly dry. Nevertheless, there are always subtle differences from wine region to wine region and even from vineyard to vineyard. For example, it remained somewhat cooler in Saint Emilion and Pomerol than in the Médoc. The wines from the so-called right bank appear classically more elegant and are perhaps more long-lived in perspective. ... In the Médoc on the left bank of the Gironde, the dominant grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon was able to mature optimally. A nice vintage to get to know important wines.

The Marsala wine comes from the western lands of Sicily and its name derives from the homonymous town. The Marsala is the oldest Italian DOC wine, with an average alcohol content of about 18 degrees. The Marsala wine owes its birth to a storm which in 1773 forced John Woodhouse, a rich and famous merchant of Liverpool, to land with his ship in the port of Marsala instead of Mazara del Vallo, where he was going to close a deal. When he landed in this Sicilian town, Woodhouse went into a tavern in the port, where he tasted the ‘Perpetum’, a strong local wine similar to Madeira or Porto, which were so appreciated by English people. So he decided to buy a large supply of that wine, which he wanted to sell in England. Woodhouse added an amount of alcohol to those barrels of wine, so increasing the alcohol content of that wine and ensuring its preservation up to its destination. The first expedition was an incredible success. All the barrels were sold in a few days and this convinced Woodhouse to return permanently to Sicily in order to develop a new and stable business.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

Prior to 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo wine or simply labelled "Nebbiolo di Barbaresco". But in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, understood that there were differences between Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Barolo district versus the same grapes grown in the Barbaresco district and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label. Today the dry red wine is produced in the Piedmont region in an area of the Langhe immediately to the east of Alba and specifically in the comunes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive plus that area of the frazione San Rocco. Quality close to perfection. Château Belair is a 1er Grand Cru Classé and neighbour of Château Ausone. It has an extraordinary history: since the 15th century it belonged to the influential Canolles family, which even managed to survive the expropriations of the French Revolution. In the 19th century, Château Bel Air was one of the most sought-after estates of all, when a change of ownership and the phylloxera disaster destroyed the estate's pre-eminence. Of course, it always remained at 1er Grand Cru level. In 2008, Belair was bought by the Moueix wine dynasty (Pétrus and many others) and has since been linked to Château Magdelaine.
