Wine 1993
The 1993 vintage demonstrates well that generalising judgements say little. The course of the year was changeable, sometimes too wet and too cool, but then with warm-dry summer months. This gave an advantage to fast-ripening grape varieties. In Bordeaux, this is Merlot. In 1993, the proportion of Merlot in the important Grand Cru Classé was therefore higher than usual and the ... wines from Pomerol and St.Emilion were very successful. In Piedmont, the Barolo regions had an advantage over Barbaresco in terms of weather. In the 90s, the boom of Barolo from single vineyards began. A lot of effort was put into the quality of these cru wines. Overall, the vintage is characterised by a classic light red wine style.

The very complex geology of the Saint-Chinian chain is present on the estate, where a mosaic of different terroirs can be found. The Saint-Chinian Causse Du Bousquet comes from a selection from low-yielding plots, mainly on the limestone plateau. Syrah, with its density, is dominant in the blend and is complemented by Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan. 2/3 are aged in Burgundian barrels of different ages and 1/3 in vats. Bottling takes place after 20-24 months. These wines have excellent conservation potential.

The Faugères appellation is located 25 km north of Béziers and nestles on the first foothills of the Black Mountain between the valley of the Orb and the plain of Béziers. The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of about 250 m above sea level on steep slopes of the Montagne Noire, which is geologically an extension of the Cévennes in a broader sense. The grape varieties used in the red wines are Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache Noir, as well as Cinsault and Carignan noir.

Vin Santo is a legendary wine specialty from the Chianti wine region. The - literally translated - holy wine is particularly valued in Tuscany with the typical almond pastry cantuccini. Like the Recioto Amarone from Valpolicella, it is made from dried grapes, usually as a white wine, rare and of higher quality than long-lasting red wine.
The vineyards of Castello di Uzzano are located directly below the castello of the Chianti capital Greve on a hillside. Even the simple Chianti Classico is aged in barrels for 18 months, including 6 months in large oak barrels (for only a subtle use of wood to keep the wine supple and elegant).

The wine comes from the Swiss canton of Valais in the partly French-speaking south-west of Switzerland. As is so often the case, viticulture in the region goes back to the Cistercians, who planted many of the terraced vineyards that still exist today. The combination of hot, sunny southern weather and cool mountain nights is particularly favourable for white wines. A complex bouquet with notes of quince jelly, mirabelle plum jam, honey, candied fruit and oriental spices. This sweet wine, which is made from Pinot gris, is called Malvoisie in Valais. It is usually harvested overripe, sometimes with noble rot.

The strange name of the Wasseros vineyard plot refers to spring areas that emerge from the ground in many places. Such places were referred to as water horses in old cadastral locations as early as 1610 and gave this area in Kiedrich its name. The vines in this first Lage (1er Cru) in the VdP grow on shallow and stony soils that are permeated with loess and loess loam. This produces delicate Rieslings with a mineral acidity, which exhibit a beautiful harmony even as young wines.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.
The Leiterchen is a single part of the Trittenheimer Apotheke vineyard is located in front of Trittenheim on the right bank of the Mosella. This region is famous for his 40%-60% incline. Soil is rocky and made up of green-blue Devon – altered slate that during the day stores the sun heat on the west-southern slopes and at night gives it back to the vine. This phenomenon allows the growing Riesling to properly ripen. The vineyard is located at 150-200 metres above sea level and stretches across 72 hectares.

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barbaresco DOC in Northern Italy, the important wine region of Piedmont. Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Piedmont. It is a wine of extremely ancient origin and was mentioned by Livy in his monumental History of Rome. It was only toward the middle of the 19th century, however, that production was begun of a dry type of wine, which brought out all of Barbaresco's extraordinary qualities. Professor Domizio Cavazza, a noted enologist, introduced new vinification techniques and, in 1894, founded a cooperative winery exclusively dedicated to the production of Barbaresco. Barbaresco is 100% made with the Nebbiolo grape. The dry red wine is produced in the Piedmont region in an area of the Langhe immediately to the east of Alba and specifically in the comunes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive plus that area of the frazione San Rocco. The soils of Barbaresco zone are composed primarily of calcareous marl dating from the Tortonian epoch.

Barolo is the most important wine in Italy. However, the growing area around the town of Barolo has a typical Piedmont characteristic. The 1,300-hectare wine region is shared by almost as many winegrowers and wineries. Wineries with 3-4 hectares of vineyards are not uncommon. Many of the Barolo winegrowers do not bottle themselves or only grow wine on the side. And, of course, there are prime locations and less interesting vineyards. Therefore, of the approximately 1,000 wineries of DOC Barolo, only about 15-20 belong to the serious Barolo producers. In Monforte d'Alba in the Bussia Soprana area there is Vigna Colonello. This is one of the best parts of Piedmont. If there is an increase for the very good vineyards of Bussia Soprana, then the Vigna Colonello vineyard is one of them. Here the sunlight is optimal, the soil composition of the grey-blue shimmering marl ideal for storing heat.

Germany is the world's third largest producer of Pinot Noir. As the name implies, it ripens late (spät) and it was brought to Germany from Burgundy. Called Pinot Noir in France, this grape produces elegant, velvety wines with a distinctive bouquet reminiscent of bitter almonds or blackberries. Only Späterburgunder wines are cultivated in Höllenberg; a native Assmannshausen wine expresses typical flinty notes from the slate soil and is fine and elegant.

Hermitage is one of the famous Grand Cru on the Côte du Rhône. The very elegant Syrah offers dark berry, spicy aromas with strong tannins and is very long-lasting.
The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. Despite its small size, the Hermitage is geologically very diverse. In the highest, western part, the soil consists of granite, which weathers into fine clay. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the Rhône had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. The name of the extremely long-lasting red wine Hermitage goes back to a hermitage founded in 1224 (Hermitage = hermit).

Chateau Prieure Lichine started out as a priory for Benedictine monks in Cantenac. Like many estates during the French Revolution, Prieure Lichine was seized, split up and sold. In 1789 parts of Prieure Lichine were bought by numerous surrounding Châteaux in the Margaux appellation. Since that time, Chateau Prieure Lichine has sold wine under several different names including La Prieuré and Prieuré-Cantenac.
In 1951 the noted author and merchant Alexis Lichine arrived in the Medoc to buy Chateau Prieure, it was down to only 4 hectares. The history of the ‘Poderi Aldo Conterno’ company mirrors that of many Italian emigrants at the end of the 19th century. From Monforte d'Alba to Argentina, and after a few years the return to the village and the old farming traditions. The Conterno family produced their own Barolo and exported it to Argentina, where relatives still lived, creating a sales market. In 1920, encouraged by their success at home and abroad, they decided to create only in the best vintages, a Barolo Riserva, able to stand the test of time. The story continued with the succession of sons to their parents, until 1961, when the company, which was by then a prestigious reality recognised throughout most of Italy, passed to Giacomo and Aldo Conterno. In 1969, the two brothers decided to realise their projects separately, and Aldo founded ‘Poderi Aldo Conterno’. Today, the company, which makes wine exclusively from its own grapes, consists of around 25 hectares of vineyards. Much of the land is located at an altitude of about 400 m above sea level.

Domaine Louis Lequin has been producing Burgundy in Santenay for four centuries, since 1669. Today, it comprises 7 hectares of premier and grand cru terroir in privileged sites throughout the Côte d'Or: Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Côtes de Nuit, as well as Pommard, Santenay, Corton, Corton Charlemagne and Bâtard-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. Today, Louis Lequin works the same land as his ancestors, such as the vineyards of 'Clos Genet', which he acquired in 1669. The vines are cultivated using sustainable practices and the traditional ploughing and hoeing each year allows the soil to be aerated and encourages the roots of the vines to dig deeper into the soil to access valuable nutrients. In the cellar, the philosophy is to let each cuvee speak of its place and so oak is used lightly for both white and red wines, using only the prized Francois Freres barrels.

Château le Bon Pateur is located in Maillet, on the excellent terriors of the Pomperol appellation. The property Le Bon Pasteur originally consisted of vineyards in the three communes of Pomerol, Saint-Émilion and Néac, the last one in the appellation Lalande-de-Pomerol. Originally all three wines were called Le Bon Pasteur, with the respective appellation indicated. From 1978, the wine from Saint-Émilion has been called Château Rolland-Maillet and that from Lalande-de-Pomerol called Château Bertineau Saint-Vincent. They are all produced at Le Bon Pasteur. The history of Chateau Le Bon Pasteur dates back all the way to 1920 when it was purchased by Joseph and Hermine Dupuy. The grandson of the original owner, Michel Rolland, the famous Bordeaux wine consultant, and his wife Dany, also an oenologist, created a model vineyard and produce outstanding wines. In May, 2013, Le Bon Pasteur was sold to Sutong Pan, the first Asian investor to buy a truly legendary Pomerol estate. Dany and Michel Rolland continue to manage the estate and make the wine.

Le Tertre Rôteboeuf is a high-ranking Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé property. It makes a single wine from Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, which is known for being rich and intense in the best years. Around 2000 cases a year are produced from a tiny 6-hectare (14-acre) vineyard on a steep slope at the edge of Saint-Émilion's famous limestone plateau. The terroir is slightly cooler than most Saint-Émilion properties, and so the vines are trained closer to the ground. This climate means that Tertre-Rôteboeuf is usually one of the last in the region to finish picking, but this also contributes to the wine's richer style.
Yields are kept very low to ensure a concentrated wine and grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The wine is then aged in new oak barrels for 18 to 24 months.
The estate is owned by François Mitjaville, who also owns Château Roc de Cambes in the Côtes de Bourg, and L'Aurage in Côtes de Castillon. Mitjaville added the 'Rôteboeuf' to the property name in 1975 to make it more distinctive. The wine tends not to be sold through the traditional negociant system, but instead is sold directly to importers and wine merchants.
While Tertre Rôteboeuf could easily achieve Premier Cru Classé status, the proprietors prefer to remain unclassified. Market prices suggest that this is not a particularly costly decision.

Château Pavie is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful terroirs of Saint-Emilion. It covers nearly 37 hectares, which makes it the largest estate in the appellation. The grape varieties used for this great long-keeping wine are unsurprisingly 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is said that vines were first planted on the slopes of Pavie and Ausone in Saint-Emilion in the 15th century. In 1885, a Bordeaux wine merchant, Ferdinand Bouffard, reconstituted a homogeneous vineyard of 50 hectares, giving it the name of Pavie. Gérard Perse was the one who brought Pavie to the supreme rank of Premier Grand Cru classé A.

Burgundy wine (French: Bourgogne) is wine made in the Burgundy region in eastern France. The most famous wines produced here - those commonly referred to as Burgundies - are red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. The Côte de Beaune area is the southern part of the Côte d'Or, the limestone ridge that is home to the great names of Burgundy wine. The Côte de Beaune starts between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune, and extends southwards for about 25km to the River Dheune.
