SW18890 1958 Salento bianco Ruffino Gold Cross
Toscana
In 1877 when cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino embraced their passion for winemaking by establishing a small winery in the town of Pontassieve near Florence, the region already had a centuries-old tradition of growing exceptional wine grapes.
Ruffino’s status was firmly established both nationally and internationally when its Chianti won a Gold Medal at the 1881 Milan Wine Exhibition, a prize at the 1884 Nice Exhibition, and another Gold Medal at the 1885 Antwerp Exhibition. In 1890, the Duke of Aosta tasted the Ruffino wines and he was so impressed by the wines that he appointed Ruffino as the official supplier to the Italian royal family. In 1927, Ruffino returned some of the honor bestowed upon its wines by releasing its first vintage of Riserva Ducale—named after the Duke of Aosta as an acknowledgement of his esteemed patronage.

Nebbiolo is a red Italian wine grape variety predominantly associated with the Piedmont region where it makes the wines of Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Gattinara. Nebbiolo is thought to derive its name from the Italian word nebbia which means fog. Nebbiolo does not adapt exceptionally well to various vineyard soil types, preferring soils with high concentration of calcareous marl such as those found on the right bank of the Tanaro river around Alba where the finest Barolo and Barbaresco are produced.

SW18404 Wine-vertical Top vineyards for the vintage 1950
Große Lage - Bourgogne Umbria Mosel

For the vertical tasting of the 1950 vintage - three wines from classic growing regions. The age of 75 years can be calculated from the three vintages compiled here.
1988 = 37 years + 1998 = 27 years + 2014 = 11 years = a total of 75 years and three excellent individual vintages!
Tasting the past years step by step is a charming gift for a wine lover. The selected vintages also represent a review of the formative periods of the jubilarian's life. The age of the 1950 vintage - 75 years - is the sum of the ages of the three individual vintages.
Here, for example: the vertical for the 1950 vintage in 2025 with a total of 75-year-old famous wines:
1988 Kiedricher Sandgrub 1.Lage Riesling Rheingau = 37 years old
1998 Sagrantino di Montefalco Arnaldo Caprai Umbria = 27 years old
2014 Gevrey Chambertin La Justice Gerard Seguin Bourgogne = 11 years old
37+27+11 years old = 75th anniversary - Germany, France, Italy
Very old wines from the 1950 vintage, if they are very well preserved and still drinkable, have an exorbitant price. And they are less suited to being drunk by the glass in the classic way, but rather unfold their charm when tasted in homeopathic doses - in other words, a few sips. Mature wines from the 80s - 90s, on the other hand, are very well suited to real tasting, real drinking.

SW805l-1 1958 Barolo Marchesi Villadoria Riserva Speciale
Piemonte
The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. Since 1970, the Castello has been under local ownership. The winery estate, which is located at the center of Barolo, presently belongs to the Abbona family, which purchased in the late 19th century.  The original and distinguished wines produced by Marchesi di Barolo are characterized by a number of highly prestigious native vines and a unique soil composition, with amalgams of clay, limestone marl, blueish marl, tuff, sandstone and sand. SW16919 1957 Nuits St.Georges Charles Ninot
Bourgogne - Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Côte d'Or has one part in the south with the Côte de Beaune and one in the north with the Côte de Nuits. It runs along the fault of the limestone hills of Burgundy and the trench of the Saône. The limestone of this region comes from the Middle Jurassic and the Upper Jurassic. The vineyards are located on the south-east facing slopes between 150 and 400 metres above sea level. A layer of marl lies above a subsoil of Jurassic limestone. Erosion is a decisive element for the quality of the individual plots (climats). The best sites are found in the upper part of the vineyards on the edge of the limestone.
The town of Nuits-Saint-Georges is the second most important wine town in Burgundy after Beaune. Similar to the Hospices de Beaune, there is also an annual auction for charity in March called Hospices de Nuits. The administrative headquarters of the famous wine fraternity Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is also located here.

SW17251 1952 Porto Messias
Port

Messias is one of the most important port wine houses. The 1952 port matured in wooden barrels and was bottled in 2002 - as is usual with trustworthy producers, this information is also on the label.

Port wine is a sweet wine that comes exclusively from the Douro Valley. The name comes from the port city of Porto, from which the port has been shipped mainly to England since the end of the 17th century.
In the 17th century, the idea of stopping wine fermentation by adding 80% wine distillate was developed. As a result, the sugar was not fermented any further and the wine retained its sweetness. This so-called fortification means that port wine has an alcohol content of between 19 and 22 percent by volume and lasts longer.
After a good two years of storage in a large barrel under airtight conditions, the Tawny Port is transferred to a small wooden barrel, the Pipa, with a capacity of 550 liters. Here it breathes (oxidizes) more and changes its color to tawny. Contact with the wood also changes the taste towards aromas of nuts, dried fruits etc. Standard Tawnys are filtered and bottled after 6-7 years.
Port wine is usually available as a non-vintage fortified wine. Only exceptionally good vintages such as 1952 are declared as a port wine vintage and allow the production of a tawny port or even a vintage port, i.e. a vintage port wine.
