Riesling

Riesling is the typical white grape variety of Germany. Characteristic fruit and a pronounced acidity have a lively balance in a good Riesling. Often one believes to recognize the origin of a Riesling right away.
The most famous are the Riesling locations of the Rheingau and the Moselle. They gained a legendary reputation early on - and achieved top prices along the way. Sometimes the Rieslings from Germany were more expensive than the Grand Crus from Bordeaux and Burgundy.
Riesling can be many things – very dry and mineral, light and dancing, finely elegant and sweet, ripe and complex. The wines can be stored for a very long time. ...
Riesling needs heat-storing locations in cool growing areas. Stony slopes and steep slopes are ideal.
If you like Riesling, you should also try the grape varieties Grüner Veltliner, Albarino, Furmint.

SW15029 2020 Maximin Grünhaus Herrenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs
Großes Gewächs - Mosel

The Herrenberg Grosse Gewächs. The 19-hectare vineyard borders the Abtsberg and is benefiting from climate change. The wines are spicy, intense, with a certain creaminess. The Maximin Grünhaus vineyard has only Grand Cru sites. The vineyards of the old estate on the Ruwer are situated in a spectacular location: the Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg vineyards extend in a row from the small Ruwer river and the south-facing von Schubert family manor house. The soil consists of bluish Devonian slate on a steep slope.

The classification of German wines is very different from that of Italy. The VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) is the Association of Quality German Winegrowers, and brings together the producers who can offer the highest results, very similar to the organisation of Burgundy territories. Furthermore, wines that are only made from grapes from certain plots of the best vineyards are called VDP Grosse Lage, similar to the 'Grand Cru' in Bourgogne. In this bottle of Riesling, the parcel is in Herrenberg. And finally within the Grosse Lage there are the Grosses Gewächs (GG), the dry wines in this category.

SW15925 2019 Layet Riesling Großes Gewächs Nik Weis
Großes Gewächs - Mosel

The steep slope of Layet has only been a VdP Grosse Lage since 2017. But the vineyard, which is only 0.8 hectares in size, has a long history. First owned by the Prince Abbey of Prüm for hundreds of years, it has belonged to the Nik Weis winery since 2006. Aromatically complex, mineral wines with grip from very old vines are typical of the location. The St.Urbans-Hof today covers 40 hectares and looks back on several centuries of wine-growing history. Fine, spicy aromas of elderberry, lilac and camomile make the wine stand out among comparable Rieslings (also agrees with Robert Parker).

SW14839 2009 Riesling Grosses Gewächs Trittenheimer Leiterchen Josef Milz
Großes Gewächs - Mosel

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

The Leiterchen is a single part of the Trittenheimer Apotheke vineyard is located in front of Trittenheim on the right bank of the Mosella. This region is famous for his 40%-60% incline. Soil is rocky and made up of green-blue Devon – altered slate that during the day stores the sun heat on the west-southern slopes and at night gives it back to the vine. This phenomenon allows the growing Riesling to properly ripen. The vineyard is located at 150-200 metres above sea level and stretches across 72 hectares.
