The name of this VDP.GROSSE LAGE® is derived from an ancient legend, which says that the souls of the winemakers went up to heaven here (Himmelspfad means path of heaven). The Recioto or Amarone is produced in the Valpolicella wine region using a special process. After the harvest, the best grapes are dried on wooden grids for two to four months. The Sartori winery was founded in Valpollicella in 1898.

Grape variety : Pinot noir
Age of the vine : 30 years.
Yields and density: 45 hl / ha with 10 000 plants / ha.
Terroir : located on the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux at 100 metres of the Clos de Vougeot and the Grands Echézaux at a spot
called «les Maizières Basses» at the bottom of the hill on a gentle slope. The vines are facing east at a height of 250 metres. Chalkyclayey
soils with 50 cm in depth composed of red clay and draining stones.
Way of culture : ploughing, earthing up every 3 years. Harvested by hand, use of a table to select the grapes. Integrated pest control,
organic fertilizer.
Vatting process : 50% of the grapes are not de-stemmed, this part is put down in the vat, the other 50% come on top of it. Maceration
at a low temperature during one week, natural yeast, the wine is kept in vats from 5 to 6 weeks at 30°C. Treading and pumping over
made according to the result of the daily tastings.
Maturing : the wine has remained 18 months in contact with fine lees in oak casks (30% of new barrels, 30% of 1-year-old barrels,
30% of over-3-year-old barrels). Barrels benefit from a 36-month drying process, the oak comes from the Allier and the Vosges
forests. Light, slow and long toasting process in wood depth.
Wine tasting : intense, elegant and complex nose . The palate is rich with dense tannins and looks promising. Velvety texture while
ageing.
Food and wine matching : Wild fowl or game, either roasted or grilled, strong cheese.
Service : Cellar it from 5 to 20 years. Serve it between 16 and 18°C ( Be careful it may taste austere when young).

The wine is produced in the communes of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Échezeaux in the wine region Côte de Nuits of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Vosne-Romanée may only be used for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape. There are 15 Premier Cru vineyards and 8 Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Échezeaux. These Grand Cru vineyards include Burgundy's most iconic, sought-after and expensive red wines, with Romanée-Conti of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Chateau Lagrange started out life as Maison Noble de Lagrange Monteil as far back as the middle ages. Historical documents mention the future Bordeaux wine producing estate as far back to 1631. The large 157 hectare, St. Julien vineyards of Chateau Lagrange has a terroir of gravel based soils. The red wine grapes are planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The terroir is mostly gravel with sand, however some parcels have clay deposits with iron as well. The vineyard is divided into 110 different parcels.
