One of Sicily's ancient autochthonous grape varieties - Ansonica or Insolia - from one of Sicily's flagship wineries - Firriato. Founded by Salvatore di Gaetano in the early 1980s and has since grown to include outstanding vineyards.

The Italian region of Apulia (Puglia) with its capital Bari is located deep in the south on the Adriatic coast. The elongated region consists of the spur (the Gargano Mountains) and the heel (the Salento Peninsula) of the boot. The area is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world, as the Phoenicians and Greeks planted vines here 3,000 years ago. The Romans particularly valued the wine from Tarentum (port city of Taranto) and the poet Horace (65-8 BC) described this area as a place of “eternal spring”. In contrast to the other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains, but the landscape consists of plateaus and flatlands. The climate is dry and hot with little rainfall, so artificial irrigation is sometimes necessary. The soils consist primarily of limestone, clay and sandstone. Puglia has the most grape varieties in southern Italy, around 80 percent of which are red. Many of them are autochthonous - these have been particularly cared for and cultivated in recent years.

Probably the most famous and well-known DO in Spain has a very old winemaking history. Numerous fermentation tanks carved into stone have been preserved, which testify to viticulture in ancient times. Priorat is an ancient Spanish wine region that fell into oblivion with the phylloxera epidemic in the 19th century and was only rediscovered by young winemakers in the 1980s and became a cult. Typical are the cuvées of Granacha and Carinyena. Both grape varieties tolerate the mild, rather dry climate excellently and are characterised in their aroma by the dark slate soil of the Priorat.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

The Leiterchen is a single part of the Trittenheimer Apotheke vineyard is located in front of Trittenheim on the right bank of the Mosella. This region is famous for his 40%-60% incline. Soil is rocky and made up of green-blue Devon – altered slate that during the day stores the sun heat on the west-southern slopes and at night gives it back to the vine. This phenomenon allows the growing Riesling to properly ripen. The vineyard is located at 150-200 metres above sea level and stretches across 72 hectares.

Hermitage is one of the famous Grand Cru on the Côte du Rhône. The very elegant Syrah offers dark berry, spicy aromas with strong tannins and is very long-lasting.

The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. Despite its small size, the Hermitage is geologically very diverse. In the highest, western part, the soil consists of granite, which weathers into fine clay. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the Rhône had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. The name of the extremely long-lasting red wine Hermitage goes back to a hermitage founded in 1224 (Hermitage = hermit).

Mille e una Notte is the legendary wine that made Donnafugata suddenly famous. It is an assemblage of indigenous and international grape varieties - Nero d'Avola, Petit Verdot, Syrah, etc. and is based on premium wines such as Ornellaia, Sassicaia and Tignanello. Hand-picking, perfect grapes, aging in new French oak barriques for 14 months serve to create a complex, very long-living red wine. The famous Sicilian winery Donnafugata, founded in a relatively short time (1983), actually comes from Pantelleria and Marsala. A few years ago, excellent vineyards were added in Vittoria and on the Etna volcano.

The beautiful weather during the harvest after some rain in the summer allowed the grapes to ripen healthily at Château Giscours. The grape harvest was from 30.09. completed by October 8, 2008. The wine made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc has fine, noticeable tannins. There are not a lot of Chateaus that can be described as the exact mirror of the historic events of their own country. Chateau Giscours is one of these rarities. Its territory is very vast and resides in Margaux. The property passed down from a noble into the hands of the population during the French Revolution. It was then bought by a banker, who then built the beautiful Chateau. The wine was awarded in 1855 as Troisieme Grand Cru Classé but the crop was destroyed by phyllosphere shortly after. A crisis followed, then an investor saved and bettered the production but sold it again after. The new owner is the originator of the scandal of the late 90s: two years of the second wine of the house have been illegally manipulated. Then again it was sold to a new entrepreneur who brought it back to the old splendors.
