Wine 2018
The weather is getting warmer and drier year after year - including 2018. Heavy weather events such as hail, frost and sudden rain occur locally. One of the consequences is that vine diseases (after hail damage or rain) can occur suddenly and must be contained quickly. The hot, water-poor summers allow the grapes to ripen very quickly. The grape harvests ... take place earlier and are noticeably shorter. The winegrowers have to work with committed helpers in the vineyard. In Germany, the 2018 vintage was excellent where the vines still got enough water. In France, wines with a high concentration were created.

The classical dry white wine comes from the appellation Graves. Graves (from French: gravelly land) is an important subregion of the Bordeaux wine region. Graves is situated on the left bank of the Garonne river, in the upstream part of the region, southeast of the city Bordeaux. The name Graves derives from ist intensely gravelly soil. The soil is the result of glaciers from the Ice Age, which also left white quartz deposits that can still be found in the soil of some of the top winemaking estates.

The Monferrato zone lays claim to being Barbera's birthplace, and records of it growing there as far back as the 13th century. But the hills around Alba and Monforte d'Alba have proved they are capable of growing some particularly fine Barbera, as are parts of the Asti province. Century-old vines still exist in many regional vineyards and allow for the production of long-aging, robust red wines with intense fruit and enhanced tannic content. The best known appellation is the DOCG(Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) Barbera D'Asti in the Piedmont region.

Individuality is our favorite quality in wine: each year, the same grapes can give very different wines according to the climate, and then the winemaker will also slightly alter the taste of that specific wine, choosing to let the bunch of grapes ripening in the sun one more day or choosing the fermentation technique he prefers, the oak barrel or the stainless steel barrel. Either way, passion is the essential ingredient to make a fine and original wine. That is exactly what Erwin Poller has got: passion and commitment to his authenitic project. He is a master at producing excellent wines and a mindful narrator of the stories behind each bottle of wine. The peculiar labels of his bottles cleverly serve this purpose: telling a unique story of enthusiasm and originality.
A feather! Dozens of chickens scratch and peck among the Valtellina vineyards. They freeliy come from the nearby henhouse and Erwin Poller figured out that they can represent a blessing for the calcareous soil: when the chickens stroll through the vineyard they loosen and turn the soil and help areate it. And since no thing should be wasted, Poller collects the chicken feathers off the ground and uses them to decorate his bottles.
Fine wine, friendship, respect and individuality: these are the reasons that led us to choose Poller as the representative of Austrian wines in our shop.

The Valenti winery is relatively young. It was only founded in 2004 and newly planted on almost 30 hectares. The soils are among the best on Mount Etna and in Sicily in general - Passopisciaro in the municipality of Castiglione di Sizilia. Etna Rosso is a DOC for dry red wines in the Italian region (island) Sicily. Sicily is considered the cradle of Italian viticulture in general. Many of today's autochthonous grapes descend from the ancient grape varieties cultivated at the time. Sicilian wines are mainly based on two of these traditional grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese at Etna Rosso and Nero d'Avola. The Etna wines are reminiscent of Pinot Noir or even more of German Pinot Noir - mineral, with fresh cherry fruit and careful aging in wood.
In the "Storia die Vini d'Italia" (History of the Wines of Italy), published in 1596, wines from here are mentioned and their exceptional quality attributed to the fly ash blown in from Mount Etna.
The grape varieties used are 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio.

Silvaner is an old variety that once was the most important grape in Germany. It likes average exposure to sunshine and needs moist soil. Silvaner is generally best enjoyed while it is young. Especially, it is found in Franken, Rheinhessen and Saale-Unstrut. Weingut Höfling is a family-owned winery in Eußenheim situated to the Northwest of Würzburg. Almost all of their vineyards are present on slopes and hilly terrain, and most of all of the work in the vineyards is by hands. The people in the winery work very hard and with a commitment to produce unique Franconian wines that show the qualities of the region. So they uses domestic wood and hometown barrels and like the most prized Franken wines were traditionally bottled in a Bocksbeutel, a squat green or brown flagon with a round body, is by Höfling too.

A rare Arneis Reserve! The wine shows the full potential of the white grape variety with a longer maturation period and longer shelf life. Contrary to what one might expect, the Riserva is also exclusively in the stainless steel tank and the bottle. Arneis is the typical white wine of Piedmont. The grape variety of the same name was already known in the 15th century. It is relatively low in acidity, produces fragrant wines to be drunk young, with fine fruit and at the same time a strong body. Due to its susceptibility to downy mildew, Arneis almost became extinct a few years ago. It has experienced a renaissance since the 1990s.
The DOCG Roero Arneis was finally created in 2005.
The sandy hills of the Roero wine-growing region in Piedmont, across from the Barolo heartland, lend themselves particularly well to Arneis.
Pierangelo Careglio's winery is an ambitious family business that was founded in 1986 on very old vineyards with 9 hectares of vineyards. Typical for Roero is the sandy soil with clay and limestone parts. The wines from here are more aromatic and robust than their relatives from the Barolo region.

Mercurey is the most important municipal appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise in the south of Beaune. The classic Pinot Noir is a bit more rustic than the Burgundies that grow further north, but it is also fuller and stronger, which benefits its longevity.
The Louis Chavy wine company was founded 60 years ago by Louis Chavy, an owner-grower in Puligny-Montrachet and at the ‘Domaine de la Vierge Romaine ‘ in Chassey-le-Camp. Louis Chavy was born, in Puligny Montrachet in 1919, into a family who had worked the Puligny Montrachet vineyards in the Côte de Beaune for several centuries.
After studying œnology in Dijon, Louis Chavy founded his négociant business and started producing a wide range of Côte de Beaune wines, which he soon expanded to include wines from all parts of Burgundy.

However, only in the most suitable vineyards on the hills it manages to express those characteristics of elegance that make people so fond of it. Winning the national Pinot Nero contest in 2009 represented the successful completion of a long work, that keeps going on in order to offer to all the lovers of this variety an unmistakeable and intriguing interpretation, one that does not run after Burgundy but enhances and glorifies the terroir of Valle dei Laghi.

The Herrenberg Grosse Gewächs. The 19-hectare vineyard borders the Abtsberg and is benefiting from climate change. The wines are spicy, intense, with a certain creaminess. The Maximin Grünhaus vineyard has only Grand Cru sites. The vineyards of the old estate on the Ruwer are situated in a spectacular location: the Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg vineyards extend in a row from the small Ruwer river and the south-facing von Schubert family manor house. The soil consists of bluish Devonian slate on a steep slope.
The classification of German wines is very different from that of Italy. The VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) is the Association of Quality German Winegrowers, and brings together the producers who can offer the highest results, very similar to the organisation of Burgundy territories. Furthermore, wines that are only made from grapes from certain plots of the best vineyards are called VDP Grosse Lage, similar to the 'Grand Cru' in Bourgogne. In this bottle of Riesling, the parcel is in Herrenberg. And finally within the Grosse Lage there are the Grosses Gewächs (GG), the dry wines in this category.

Pernand Vergelesses is typical Burgundy - and typically complicated. On the one hand, it refers to the village appellation in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune region. Added to the village name Pernand is the designation for the best vineyard "Les Vergelesses" with 18 hectares of vineyards. However, part of it also belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Savigny-lès-Beaune. In addition, the municipality of Pernand also has a share of 17 hectares in the famous Corton vineyard and thus has wines with the Corton Grand Cru designation. Be that as it may - in any case, the red wines are among the interesting growths of Bourgogne.

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

Magnum bottle from Castello di Banfi in original wooden box. The Rosso di Montalcino from Banfi is one of the very good small Brunellos of the wine region. 100% Sangiovese from the carefully researched and selected grape variety variations at Banfi - there are a total of about 600 Sangiovese clones with very specific characteristics.
Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG for dry red wine in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone includes the slopes around the picturesque hilltop town of Montalcino - 40 kilometres south of Siena in the province of the same name. The wine is made from 100 per cent varietal Sangiovese Brunello. An important aspect of the quality lies in the very special climate, as it is warmer and drier than in the nearby Chianti areas and the nights are cooler. The Castello di Banfi winery was founded by two Italian-Americans from New York, Harry and John Mariani, who had become very wealthy by importing Lambrusco. In the mid-1970s, they created a very ambitious wine project based on the highest quality, which quickly gained great recognition.

Domaine de la Solitude is one of the most traditional wineries in the region. The oldest wine from La Solitude dates back to 1780 and the estate has been in the family since 400. The velvety smooth red wine is made from 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mouvedre and 10 Cinsault.
The history of this famous appellation in the southern section of the Rhône is closely linked to the popes. From 1309 to 1377, the city of Avignon was the seat of the popes and from 1378 to 1408 of two counter-popes. One of them was Pope John XXII (1244-1334), born in Cahors, who chose Châteauneuf Castle as his summer residence and gave important impulses to viticulture. The 3,140-hectare area was the first state-recognised appellation in France.

The Tre Pile family winery has been owned by the Ghisolfi family for four generations since 1852. The small estate is surrounded by its plots in one of the best parts of the Barolo region - the Bussia Soprana vineyard in Monforte d'Alba. Tre Pile has very famous neighbors with Aldo Conterno and Giacomo Fenocchio, but is still an insider tip to be discovered.
At about 400m above sea level, the vineyard has a southwest exposure on typical bluish clayey loam soil.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.

The legendary Grand Vin de la Solitude. An extremely elegant, complex Châteauneuf du Pape. The Domaine de la Solitude is one of the most traditional wineries in the region. The oldest wine from La Solitude dates back to 1780 and the estate has been family-owned since 400.
