The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Chateau Troplong Mondot was in the 17th century the property of Abbé Raymond de Sèze. It was de Seze, who created in 1745 the chateau that remains at Troplong Mondot today. In 1850, Raymond Troplong became the owner of this Right Bank estate.
Troplong Mondot occupies great terroir. The 33 hectare vineyard lies on the slopes, at an elevation over 100 meters that allows views of the entire St. Emilion village. The soil consists of deep limestone deposits under layers of thick clay. There are also sedimentary fragments of flint and limestone.  In 2006 Chateau Troplong Mondot was awarded their well deserved promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé B status, which was upheld in the recent 2012 St. Emilion classification. Port is the name given to a sweet wine originating exclusively from the Douro Valley. The name comes from the port city of Porto, from which port was shipped mainly to England from the end of the 17th century.

In the 17th century, the idea was developed to stop the fermentation of the wine by adding 80 percent wine distillate. This stopped the sugar from fermenting further and the wine retained its sweetness. Through this so-called fortification, port has an alcohol content of between 19 and 22 percent by volume and is more durable.
After the Tawny Port has been stored for a good two years under exclusion of air in the large barrel, it is transferred to a small wooden barrel, the pipa, with a capacity of 550 litres. Here it breathes (oxidises) more strongly and changes its colour to tawny. The contact with the wood also changes the taste to aromas of nuts, dried fruit, etc. Standard tawnies are filtered and bottled after 6-7 years.
