In 1844 Luciano Francisco Ramòn de Murrieta, returned to his home near Logrono in Rioja from England, where he developed an appreciation for wine, recognized that there was nothing wrong with the grapes growing in Rioja's vineyards. The only problem was that the wine was not being produced correctly. Determined to obtain sufficient knowledge on winemaking to make a good modern wine, he went to Bordeaux, where he studied both grape growing and winemaking techniques. Four years later, he began producing wine in Rioja using local grapes, mostly Garnacha and Tempranillo, the 1852 vintage being the first of what today is considered traditional Rioja, a red aged in oak casks, marked by the taste of both fruit and wood, and possessing the potential for extended cellaring.

In the year 1877, the cousins Leopoldo and Ilario Ruffino developing their own small winery in a town near Florence, Pontassieve. Ruffino become popular for their balanced and clean wines, embracing the motto “Here We Make Ideal Wine.” The status also of Ruffino family was also established firmly both internationally and nationally when its own Ruffino Chianti won the gold medal during the Milan Wine exhibition in the year 1881, and a consolation prize during the Nice Exhibition in 1884 and another one gold medal in Antwerp Exhibition in year 1885. Because of its success, the Duke of Aosta was tasted it in Pontassieve, and declared the Ruffino winery of Leopoldo and Ilario as the authorized supplier of wines to the royal family in the Italy. Additionally, in the year 1927, Ruffino winery returned some of the honor given upon its world class wines by releasing its first vintage wine of Riserva Ducale, entitled for the Duke of Aosta.

Three bottles of exquisite Riesling from the Grand Cru vineyard Trittenheimer Leiterchen on the Moselle for a vertical tasting of the 1966 vintage. But not simply a straightforward tasting of the vintage, but a vertical tasting, a thought experiment, from which the age of 60 years can be calculated. 1993 = 33 years + 2004 = 22 years + 2021 = 5 years = a total of 60 years and three excellent individual vintages!
Revisiting the past years step by step is a charming and meaningful gift for a wine lover. The selected vintages represent, as it were, a retrospective of the defining stages of the recipient's life. The age of the 1966 vintage – 60 years – is the sum of the ages of the three individual vintages.
Wine experts love such vertical tastings. The Grand Cru Leiterchen vineyard is located within the Trittenheimer Apotheke vineyard, opposite the wine village of Trittenheim on the right bank of the Moselle River. This very steep single vineyard (hence the name) is exclusively owned by the Milz family. The vines are extremely old, and the wines from this vineyard are exceptionally rich in extract.
