Wine 2004
2004 is a very classic vintage. The early summer was hot and dry, followed with a more moist period in August and a perfectly warm and dry weather in September. Classic wines are characterized by soft tannins, distinc fruits and a pleasant freshness. Remarkable are the wines from Saint Emilion like Pomerol and Cabernet Franc. ...

The Auvigue winery specializes in the wines of southern Bourgogne - and thus in white wines. Founded in 1946 by Francis Auvigue, the house is based in Fuissé. The area named after the city of Mâcon on the Sâone river with around 5,400 hectares of vineyards belongs to the Burgundy region. Even the Roman poet Ausonius (310-395) mentioned the wines from this area. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the Cistercians planted vines here on a larger scale. The area became famous in 1660 when the winegrower Claude Brosse delivered wine to Versailles and the French “Sun King” Louis XIV (1638-1715) noticed his size at a fair there. The king spoke to him, tasted his wine after mass and was so enthusiastic that the royal court was regularly supplied with it. The area stretches along the Sâone in a strip 15 kilometers long.

Alongside Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé is the origin of the best Sauvignon Blanc from France. In Pouilly-Fumé the vines grow on flint soil and here it is the rare case that you can actually taste smoky notes in the wine. One of the most famous winemakers in Pouilly-Fumé is Jean-Claude Dagueneau from Saint Andelain. His Sauvignon Blancs are highly rated.

German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. Since 1520, the Milz family has been known as great winemakers in Trittenheim, a wine village in the well-known Moselschleife. Parts of the original 1680 wine cellar are today still visible. Milz’s wines are quite classic Riesling from the Mosel, since they present the ideal alcohol level, delicatesugar residue and an extremely long finish. In 1900, these wines used to be the most expensive in any European restaurant’s menu, even more high-priced than the best Burgundies and Bordeaux wines.
The Leiterchen is a single part of the Trittenheimer Apotheke vineyard is located in front of Trittenheim on the right bank of the Mosella. This region is famous for his 40%-60% incline. Soil is rocky and made up of green-blue Devon – altered slate that during the day stores the sun heat on the west-southern slopes and at night gives it back to the vine. This phenomenon allows the growing Riesling to properly ripen. The vineyard is located at 150-200 metres above sea level and stretches across 72 hectares.

The Pommard appellation, named after the municipality of the same name, with 313 hectares of vineyards is located in the Côte de Beaune part of the Burgundian Côte d'Or. It connects to the municipality of Volnay. The Cistercians had vineyards here as early as the 12th century. The clergyman Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described this wine in his famous book. Almost exclusively red wines are made from Pinot Noir with proportions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault. There are around 30 Premiers Crus with 128 hectares of vineyards.

Clos la Madeleine is in a prime location in Saint Emilion close to the 1er Cru Ausone, Belair and Canon. It has only 2.5 hectares of vineyards, 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc. The winery has existed since 1841 and was taken over by a group of wine enthusiasts in 1992, since then the quality of the wines has improved significantly. The classical dry red wine comes from the appellation Saint-Emilion in Bordeaux. Saint-Émilion is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for wine in the Bordeaux wine region of France, where it is situated in the Libourne subregion on the right bank of the Dordogne. The wines of Saint-Émilion are typically blended from different grape varieties, the three main ones being Merlot (60% of the blend), Cabernet Franc (nearly 30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (around 10%). Only since 1954, there has been an official classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The classification is updated every 10 years, and consists of the following levels: Premier grand cru classé A, Premier grand cru classé B, and Grand cru classé.

The estate dates back to the mid-19th century and was created by the Beylot family, négociants from Libourne. The 13 hectares of the Clos de l'Oratoire are located on the hill to the north-east of Saint-Émilion. Its terroir of molasse de Fronsac consists of a sandy subsoil and a clay subsoil and is therefore particularly suited to the cultivation of Merlot, which constitutes 80% of the varietal heritage. In 1972, the Graf von Neipperg family bought the shares of the estate. The other Von Neipperg properties include Château Canon-la-Gaffelière and the 'super-cuvée' La Mondotte.

The originality of this extraordinary terroir of St. Emilion lies in its diversity of soils, slopes and orientations. Chateau Tertre Daugay was featured between 1844 and 1848 among the 14 most sought after and most expensive wines of Saint-Emilion. For close to a century the great reference book Cocks and Feret “Bordeaux et ses Vins” will consistently mention the property as a First Growth of Saint-Emilion. The vineyard was also one of the prominent Saint-Emilion estates to receive a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1867.

Château Ferrière is the smallest of all the Crus Classés in Margaux. Its vineyard covers only 10 hectares, but the owners (since 1988) - Mrs Claire Villars-Lurton and her family - have restored the high reputation of this 3rd Cru Classé. The mansion was embellished, the vineyard was improved, and new and very efficient equipment was bought. The vineyard is located on two beautiful knolls of gravelly and sandy soil with a limestone substrate. It is mainly composed of Cabernet-Sauvignon (80%).

Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG for dry red wine in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone covers the slopes around the picturesque hilltop town of Montalcino - 40 kilometers south of Siena in the province of the same name. The wine is made 100 percent from the Sangiovese variety Brunello. An important aspect of quality lies in the very special climate, as it is warmer and drier than in the nearby Chianti areas and the nights are cooler. The Castello di Banfi winery was founded by the two Italian-Americans Harry and John Mariani from New York, who had become very wealthy by importing Lambrusco. In the mid-1970s they created a very ambitious wine project that focused on the highest quality and quickly gained great recognition.

At Château Giscours, 2004 is a very classic vintage. The warm September allowed an early harvest from 11.9. until 11/30/2004. The wine contains 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot. There are not a lot of Chateaus that can be described as the exact mirror of the historic events of their own country. Chateau Giscours is one of these rarities. Its territory is very vast and resides in Margaux. The property passed down from a noble into the hands of the population during the French Revolution. It was then bought by a banker, who then built the beautiful Chateau. The wine was awarded in 1855 as Troisieme Grand Cru Classé but the crop was destroyed by phyllosphere shortly after. A crisis followed, then an investor saved and bettered the production but sold it again after. The new owner is the originator of the scandal of the late 90s: two years of the second wine of the house have been illegally manipulated. Then again it was sold to a new entrepreneur who brought it back to the old splendors.
