The Château Haut-Piquat is located in the Lussac Saint-Emilion growing area and was the first winery in 1972 taken over by the Rivière family. From the elegant wine cellar, the view over the surrounding hills is remarkable: hectares of vines and forest, especially on the hill of Picampeau, where there is also an impressive megalith. Today, the winery has 22 hectares of continuous vineyards on an excellent lime soil, as well as hills with various sand-pitted red clay formations. In contrast to the otherwise predominant Buntsandstein, the soil of the Weilberg consists of clayey loam with a certain limestone content. The high hematite (iron) content produces a soil type that is also known as "terra rossa" (red earth) and is generally only found in the Mediterranean region. German most famous and oldest viticulture is the „Steilhange“, steep slopes along the Mosella river. No wonder that Weingut Milz can praise such a long winemaking tradition and history. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built.
