The red Freisa grape variety is a fine speciality of the Italian region of Piedmont, where it covers around 2,000 hectares. It has been recognised here since 1799. In the southwest of France, in the Lot valley, lies the Cahors wine-growing region. It forms a link between Bordeaux and Languedoc. Viticulture has a long tradition in the area named after the town of Cahors; it is one of the oldest and most famous wine-growing regions in France. Chateau Croizet Bages is a 30 hectare Bordeaux vineyard at the Bages plateau near Lynch Bages and Grand Puy Lacoste. The soils of gravel, sand, iron and minerals are specific to the Bages plateau. Hermitage is one of the famous Grand Cru on the Côte du Rhône. The very elegant Syrah offers dark berry, spicy aromas with strong tannins and is very long-lasting.

The Hermitage Hill was formed in the Ice Age when the Rhône broke through this eastern extension of the Massif Central following a rapid fall in sea level. Despite its small size, the Hermitage is geologically very diverse. In the highest, western part, the soil consists of granite, which weathers into fine clay. The eastern, larger part of the slope, on the other hand, is formed in the middle by rubble made of sand and limestone that the Rhône had transported from the Alps. At the foot of the slope there are younger sediments from the Würme Ice Age. The highest points are again covered with loess. To protect the thin layers of soil from slipping, walls made of limestone were built. The name of the extremely long-lasting red wine Hermitage goes back to a hermitage founded in 1224 (Hermitage = hermit).

Chateau Prieure Lichine started out as a priory for Benedictine monks in Cantenac. Like many estates during the French Revolution, Prieure Lichine was seized, split up and sold. In 1789 parts of Prieure Lichine were bought by numerous surrounding Châteaux in the Margaux appellation. Since that time, Chateau Prieure Lichine has sold wine under several different names including La Prieuré and Prieuré-Cantenac.
In 1951 the noted author and merchant Alexis Lichine arrived in the Medoc to buy Chateau Prieure, it was down to only 4 hectares. Today Chateau Prieure Lichine is expanded to 77 hectares of vines in their Margaux vineyards. This region has the thinnest soil in Medoc with the highest proportion of gravel that allows the soil to drain very well.

Conterno, is a family of emigrated in Argentina, who returned to Monforte d'Alba, at the end of the 19th century. They increased the production of local wine to be sold in casks not only in Piedmont and Liguria but in the Americas, thanks to parents who stayed in Argentina. Motivated by success, the Conternos began to create a superior Barolo, to be produced exclusively in the best vintages, which saw long vinification periods and was extremely long-lived. In the 1920s, the first Barolo Riserva was bottled. In 1961 Giacomo and Aldo inherit the winery, and in 1969, Aldo decided to go it alone and founded Poderi Aldo Conterno. Today Conterno’s wines are respected around the world. The farmhouse is situated in the Bussia hamlet, a section of the Monforte d’Alba village. At present, the farm comprises about 25 hectares of vineyards considered to be some of the very best plots in all of the Langhe. At an altitude of about 400 meters above sea level
