Sauternes is located about 25 miles south east from the city center of Bordeaux, at the Southern end of Graves. The entire Sauternes appellation has 2,002 hectares under vine. This can be divided into 5 separate communes, each with their own unique terroir.

Founded in the 13th century by the Benedictine monks of Sainte-Croix Abbey, Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest estates in the Bordeaux region. Established on the silico-limestone crests dominating the cool valley of the "Eau-Blanche" which crosses the commune of Léognan, capital of the Grand Graves country. In 1956, Marc Perrin purchased the château, that became a Cru Classé in 1959, for its red and white wines. The white wines of Carbonnieux are dry, full of breeding and distinction, with plenty of rich fruit. They are exceptional wines. The red wines are full of aromatic flavours, fleshy, with an elegant bouquet.

The first owner of the famous Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou was the eponymous Ducru family in the 17th century, the second part of the name is derived from the pebble floor: beau caillou = beautiful pebble. In 1941 it was bought by Francis Borie. Jean-Eugène Borie, who died in 1998, expanded it into a top winery. Today it is run by his grandson François Xavier. In the Bordeaux Classification in 1855 it received the second rank of Deuxième Cru Classé. The vineyards with 50 hectares of vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The extremely long-lasting red wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in half new oak barrels. He is considered one of the so-called “super seconds” that would deserve the Premier Cru Classé.

 The legendary winery is located in the Saint-Julien area. St.Julien is one of the six famous municipalities (along with Listrac-Médoc, Margaux, Moulis, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe) within the French region of Haut-Médoc, which are their own appellations and are allowed to bear the place name on the label. The soils consist of a thin layer of gravel with sandy loess on an iron-rich subsoil with marl and gravel. The tannin-rich and long-lasting red wines are in style between those from Margaux (Finesse) and Pauillac (Power); They are characterized by consistently high quality across the entire range.
