Valtellina is a DOC for red wines in the north of the Italian region of Lombardy. The zone includes the municipalities of Biancone, Buglio in Monte, Castione Andevenno, Chiuro, Sondrio and Tirano in the Valtellina valley on the upper course of the Adda river (German: Veltlin) in the Alpine province of Sondrio. The wine is also called Veltliner, but there is no connection with the white, Austrian grape variety. The Swiss writer Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), who lived in this valley for a long time, repeatedly referred to it under this name as his absolute favourite wine. The general Prince Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein (1583-1634) was an excessive wine drinker until he was 30 years old. Due to severe gout problems, his doctor prescribed moderation and recommended only this red wine, which Wallenstein adhered to until his (violent) death.

The mostly south-facing terraced vineyards with stony loam soil are located along a 45-kilometre stretch at an altitude of up to 800 metres. Nearby is the 4,050-metre-high Piz Bernina, which offers protection against the north winds. Partly, the grapes have to be brought down to the valley on pulleys. The area is divided into about 700 hectares for the simple DOC Valtellina and 500 hectares for the DOCG Valtellina Superiore. The DOC version is made from 80% Nebbiolo (here Chiavennasca - meaning "which grows here") and possibly other authorised red varieties (up to 20%).The sites or subzones Grumello (named after a castle), Inferno (hottest site in the valley), Sassella (named after a chapel),Paradiso and Valgella may additionally bear the name on the bottle label.

The Produttori del Barbaresco are an association of small wineries, some of which have tiny plots in prime locations. After the war, in 1958, the Produttori del Barbaresco Foundation was set up, which contributed to the rebirth of the entire area, initially bringing together 19 wineries, which today number more than 50. An ever-growing path for this wine, representative of an entire area, which ended in 1966 with the DOC denomination and in 1980 with the DOCG denomination.
