The name ‘Meleto’ was first mentioned in the 11th century, when the castle belonged to the Benedictine monks of Badia a Coltibuono. Situated on the border between the long-enemy republics of Florence and Siena, it was regarded as the centre of Tuscan power politics. The castle of Meleto is located in the ‘Chianti Classico’ region. For centuries, the wines produced here were known to be particularly fine. In 1716, the area was finally officially declared the birthplace of the famous Chianti wine. Today, the designation ‘Chianti Classico’ is strictly protected. Of the immense 1,200 hectares of land, almost all of which is located in the municipality of Gaiole, 125 hectares are vineyards belonging to the Castello di Meleto estate. The wine tradition of the noble Ricasoli family dates back to 1141. Around 1850, the Barone di Ricasoli created the first binding regulations for Chianti. His ideas on the blend of grape varieties for Chianti have since been modified. The main grape variety is of course still Sangiovese.

Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG for dry red wine in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone covers the slopes around the picturesque hilltop town of Montalcino - 40 kilometers south of Siena in the province of the same name. The wine is made 100 percent from the Sangiovese variety Brunello. The Castello di Banfi winery was founded by the two Italian-Americans Harry and John Mariani from New York, who had become very wealthy by importing Lambrusco.
