Recognition of DOCG status came in 1980. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano production zone comprises the land belonging to the municipal area of Montepulciano in the province of Siena, a particularly favourable location on the hilly ridge between Val di Chiana and Val d’Orcia. In the year 1877, the cousins Leopoldo and Ilario Ruffino  developing their own small winery in a town near Florence, Pontassieve.  Ruffino become popular for their balanced and clean wines, embracing the motto “Here We Make Ideal Wine.” The status also of Ruffino family was also established firmly both internationally and nationally when its own Ruffino Chianti won the gold medal during the Milan Wine exhibition in the year 1881, and a consolation prize during the Nice Exhibition in 1884 and another one gold medal in Antwerp Exhibition in year 1885. Because of its success, the Duke of Aosta was tasted it in Pontassieve,  and declared the Ruffino winery of Leopoldo and Ilario as the authorized supplier of wines to the royal family in the Italy.

Nebbiolo is a red Italian wine grape variety predominantly associated with the Piedmont region where it makes the wines of Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Gattinara. Nebbiolo is thought to derive its name from the Italian word nebbia which means fog. One of the most classic Chianti Classico. Of the immense 1,200 hectares of land, almost entirely in the municipality of Gaiole, 125 hectares are vineyards of the Castello di Meleto estate. The strange name of the Wasseros vineyard plot refers to spring areas that emerge from the ground in many places. Such places were referred to as water horses in old cadastral locations as early as 1610 and gave this area in Kiedrich its name. The vines in this first Lage (1er Cru) in the VdP grow on shallow and stony soils that are permeated with loess and loess loam. This produces delicate Rieslings with a mineral acidity, which exhibit a beautiful harmony even as young wines.

The Produttori del Barbaresco are an association of small wineries, some of which have tiny plots in prime locations. After the war, in 1958, the Produttori del Barbaresco Foundation was set up, which contributed to the rebirth of the entire area, initially bringing together 19 wineries, which today number more than 50. An ever-growing path for this wine, representative of an entire area, which ended in 1966 with the DOC denomination and in 1980 with the DOCG denomination. The first dry Barbaresco of this name was then produced in 1890 by the oenologist Domizzio Cavazza, director of the viticultural school in Alba in Barbaresco. This can be seen as the birth of today's wine. Like Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes.

The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. Since 1970, the Castello has been under local ownership. The winery estate, which is located at the center of Barolo, presently belongs to the Abbona family, which purchased in the late 19th century.  The original and distinguished wines produced by Marchesi di Barolo are characterized by a number of highly prestigious native vines and a unique soil composition, with amalgams of clay, limestone marl, blueish marl, tuff, sandstone and sand. In order to better define and enhance their different characteristics, the most prestigious historical crus are made from a single variety, and individually aged and bottled.

Officially, the winery was founded by Giacomo Borgogno & Figli in 1848. However, private correspondence shows that wines from the Borgogno family have been produced since 1761.
