 In 1844 Luciano Francisco Ramòn de Murrieta, returned to his home near Logrono in Rioja from England, where he  developed an appreciation for wine, recognized that there was nothing wrong with the grapes growing in Rioja's vineyards. The only problem was that the wine was not being produced correctly. Determined to obtain sufficient knowledge on winemaking to make a good modern wine, he went to Bordeaux, where he studied both grape growing and winemaking techniques. Four years later, he began producing wine in Rioja using local grapes, mostly Garnacha and Tempranillo, the 1852 vintage being the first of what today is considered traditional Rioja, a red aged in oak casks, marked by the taste of both fruit and wood, and possessing the potential for extended cellaring.

The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. Nebbiolo is a red Italian wine grape variety predominantly associated with the Piedmont region where it makes the wines of Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Gattinara. The Pommard appellation, named after the municipality of the same name, with 313 hectares of vineyards is located in the Côte de Beaune part of the Burgundian Côte d'Or. It connects to the municipality of Volnay. The Cistercians owned vineyards here as early as the 12th century. The clergyman Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described this wine in his famous book. The Domaine Romanée Conti, abbreviated DRC, is legendary. The company is located in the Vosne Romanée appellation in Burgundy. The origins of the Domaine Romanée Conti date back to 1232.
