Wine 1973

For decades, the wines of the 1973 vintage lay untouched in the wine cellar like a time capsule. Anyone who opens a perfectly preserved bottle of the vintage 1973 now enjoys a wine that was shaped by the weather, temperatures, sun and rain of 1973. 1973 was a hot sunny vintage, interrupted by erratic rainfall. The wines ripened faster than usual. ... The difference with vintages that were slow to develop is often noticeable. After opening, 1973 wines do not need long decanting. Spiciness and perceived sweetness (in a dry wine) are typical of the vintage.
A real old and drinkable wine from 1973. Every wine lover is fascinated by a perfectly aged and rare red wine with a world-famous origin.

SW17265 1973 Kiedricher Wasseros Riesling Kabinett halbe
1. Lage - Rheingau

A perfect half bottle from 1973. The strange name of the Wasseros vineyard plot refers to spring areas that emerge from the ground in many places. Such places were referred to as water horses in old cadastral locations as early as 1610 and gave this area in Kiedrich its name. The vines in this first Lage (1er Cru) in the VdP grow on shallow and stony soils that are permeated with loess and loess loam. This produces delicate Rieslings with a mineral acidity, which exhibit a beautiful harmony even as young wines.

SW17641 1973 Cirò Caparra e Siciliani
Calabria - Cirò

Calabria’s viticulture is dominated by two grape varieties, the red Gaglioppo and the white Greco. The best known of Calabria’s DOC wines is Cirò. Grown on the foothills of the Ionian coast, this historic wine could not be further removed from its famous ancestor. Modern methods of vine training and improved vinification techniques have produced a fresh, deeply aromatic wine, with no signs of the oxidation that characterised earlier versions. The best examples can age for decades, into majestic dark, brooding wines, densely flavoured with red and black fruits, tar and spices.

SW3674l 1973 Barolo Giovanni Pippione
Piemonte
The classical dry red wine comes from the Barolo DOC in Northern Italy, the most important wine region of Piedmont. Prior to the mid-19th century, Barolo was a sweet wine. The fact that the Nebbiolo grape ripens late in October meant that temperatures would be steadily dropping by harvest. By November and December, temperatures in the Piedmont region would be cold enough to halt fermentation, leaving a significant amount of residual sugar left in the wine. In the mid-19th century the French enologist Louis Oudart improve the winemaking techniques of the local producers. Using techniques focusing on improving the hygiene of the cellar, Oudart was able to ferment the Nebbiolo must completely dry, making the first modern Barolo. This new, dry red wine soon became a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House of Savoy, giving rise to the popular description of Barolo as the wine of kings, the king of wines.

SW17821 1973 Chateau du Terrey
Cru Bourgeois - Bordeaux - Haut-Médoc

Château du Terrey is a small, fine Cru Bourgeois near Pauillac. The climate, characterized by the nearby Atlantic and the many rivers, is extremely favorable for viticulture. Summer is not too dry or hot, autumn is sunny and winter is mild. The predominantly barren and stony gravel soil means that the roots of the vines have to dig up to ten meters deep into the ground to find water. This means that both dry periods and rainy periods (drainage promoted by gravel soil) can be better survived. The stony ground also serves as a heat reservoir.

SW15971-2 1973 Barolo Antichi Poderi dei Marchesi di Barolo
Piemonte

The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. Since 1970, the Castello has been under local ownership. The winery estate, which is located at the center of Barolo, presently belongs to the Abbona family, which purchased in the late 19th century.  The original and distinguished wines produced by Marchesi di Barolo are characterized by a number of highly prestigious native vines and a unique soil composition, with amalgams of clay, limestone marl, blueish marl, tuff, sandstone and sand. In order to better define and enhance their different characteristics, the most prestigious historical crus are made from a single variety, and individually aged and bottled.

SW18192 1973 Barolo Riserva Giacomo Borgogno
Piemonte - Barolo

Officially, the winery was founded by Giacomo Borgogno & Figli in 1848. However, private correspondence shows that wines from the Borgogno family have been produced since 1761. The wines from the still small winery were among the first to be exported beyond Italy's borders. Even Tsar Nicholas II, among others, appreciated Borgogno's Barolo. There is evidence that Borgogno wines were served at the official celebrations to mark the unification of Italy in 1861. Three of these historic bottles still exist. After the death of patriarch Cesare Borgogno, his close associate Franco Boschis took over the winery.

Château Cheval Blanc, which dates back to the 1830s, is located in Bordeaux's Saint-Émilion appellation, on the right bank of the Gironde River. Although Saint-Émilion is mainly Merlot country, Cheval Blanc normally contains a high percentage of Cabernet Franc, which has always made for a very distinctive wine. Like every other right-bank Château, Cheval Blanc was omitted from the 1855 classifications. In fact, with the exception of Haut Brion, which is from Graves, all of the wines classified were from the Medoc. the wines of Saint Émilion, a commune on the Right Bank, were ranked in 1955 and Cheval Blanc was one of two that received the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé (A). Those rankings were redone in 1969, 1986, and 1996 and most recently in 2006 and Cheval Blanc has remained a First Growth in every ranking.

SW16665 1973 Grands Échézeaux Domaine Romanée Conti
Bourgogne - Marsannay

The Domaine Romanée Conti, abbreviated DRC, is legendary. The company is located in the Vosne Romanée appellation in Burgundy. The origins of the Domaine Romanée Conti date back to 1232. The Romanée vineyard was planted exclusively with Pinot Noir by the monks of Staint-Vivant and is still the same size today as it was then. Due to one of the rare changes of ownership in the 17th century, the name Conti was added. In 1942, Mr. de Villaine took over the management of the Domaine Romanée Conti and took the winery to new heights. The Grand Échezeaux is one of the most important Grand Cru sites in Burgundy. It is located on a slightly rising eastern slope at an altitude of 250 to 260 m above sea level. To the northeast it borders Clos de Vougeot, to the west is Échezeaux and to the south is the Premier Cru location Les Suchots.
