Cava is a quality sparkling wine from the Spanish wine-growing region of Penedès. Like all high-quality sparkling wines, it is produced by bottle fermentation like champagne. The Pommard appellation, named after the municipality of the same name, with 313 hectares of vineyards is located in the Côte de Beaune part of the Burgundian Côte d'Or. It connects to the municipality of Volnay. The Cistercians owned vineyards here as early as the 12th century. The clergyman Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described this wine in his famous book. Pinot gris (French) is a white wine grape variety. Ruländer is the name under which the grape variety is classified in Germany, Grauer Burgunder and Grauburgunder are permissible synonyms for German wines of this variety. Although the berry skin is reddish to red and gray in color, it is assigned to the white wine varieties. It is a rather difficult grape variety in terms of viticulture. The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. The strange name of the Wasseros vineyard plot refers to spring areas that emerge from the ground in many places. Such places were referred to as water horses in old cadastral locations as early as 1610 and gave this area in Kiedrich its name. The Swartland lies north of Paarl in a warm, low-rainfall area. About 100 km north-east of Cape Town, on the south-eastern foothills of the Kasteelberg, lies the Allesverloren wine estate. The Portuguese grape variety Tinta Barocca produces fine spicy, long-lasting red wines here.
The history of the winery dates back to the period between 1696 and 1704, when the governor of the Cape bequeathed it to a widow named Cloete. This courageous woman was one of the first settlers to venture into the inhospitable Swartland region. The first settlers were simple people who had only the most basic farming tools and necessities to support themselves. To buy tools or visit church, they had to make a long and arduous journey by wagon over primitive roads to Stellenbosch. On their return from such a journey in 1704, the settlers found their house burnt down and the farm destroyed. Hence the sad name "All Lost", meaning "all is lost". The owners of Allesverloren harvested the first grapes as early as 1806, and since the estate passed into the hands of the Malan family 140 years ago, Allesverloren has gone from strength to strength.

In the village that gives Barolo its name, opposite the imposing Castello dei Falletti, is one of the most traditional wine houses in Piedmont. Marchesi di Barolo is the second largest estate in the Barolo wine-growing region. The estate was originally owned by the Marchesa Falletti. The Falletti family is considered the inventor of the wine that is known today as Barolo. Tradition is highly valued on the estate. The historic barrels are preserved and even used in the cellar. The tasting room is full of wines from earlier vintages dating back to 1893. The red grape variety Barbera probably originates from the Italian region of Piedmont, where it is the most common variety and accounts for half of the vineyard area. Its origin is disputed, but one version is that it was introduced to Piedmont by the Lombards as early as the 7th century. It has been known there since the 13th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1799. This very high-yielding vine produces wines that are high in acidity and low in tannins. However, with rigorous yield restrictions and in a good location, the wines are full-bodied and powerful. Today, Barbera is often matured in barriques to make up for the lack of tannins.
