Historically the name should be given only to the municipalities of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, that were part of the ancient "Florentine Military League of Chianti" whose symbol was a black rooster. Recognition of DOCG status came in 1980. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano production zone comprises the land belonging to the municipal area of Montepulciano in the province of Siena, a particularly favourable location on the hilly ridge between Val di Chiana and Val d’Orcia. The Pommard appellation, named after the municipality of the same name, with 313 hectares of vineyards is located in the Côte de Beaune part of the Burgundian Côte d'Or. The appellation is named after the small town of Rivesaltes, north of Perpignan, in the French region of Roussillon. The sweet vin doux naturel is produced from overripe grapes that have already dried on the vine. In order to preserve the natural residual sugar of at least 100 g/l, the fermentation is stopped by adding ethyl alcohol and the wine is fortified to 15% alcohol by volume. Grignolino is one of the characteristic wines of Piedmont and its value is further enhanced by the limited quantity produced. The name derives from the dialect term for the seed of the grape called 'grignola' as it contains more of it than other varieties. The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . Juliette saw the great potential of the wine made in Barolo that, after a complete fermentation and a long aging in wood, would have been able to unveil all the qualities typical of the soil and of the grape variety: Nebbiolo. Since 1970, the Castello has been under local ownership. The Giordano family has been producing fine wines in the heart of Piedmont, in the Valle Talloria d'Alba, since 1900.
