The Lombardy region lies in North-Central Italy, between Piedmont to the west and Veneto to the east. It is not known, at least worldwide, for winemaking. Officially, the winery was founded by Giacomo Borgogno & Figli in 1848. However, private correspondence shows that wines from the Borgogno family have been produced since 1761. Grignolino is one of the characteristic wines of Piedmont and its value is further enhanced by the limited quantity produced. The name derives from the dialect term for the seed of the grape called 'grignola' as it contains more of it than other varieties. The end of the 19th century represents one of the greatest moments of glory in the history of Grignolino: it was considered one of the main Piedmontese vines, liked and appreciated by many (even praised in 1891 by Umberto I of Savoy, on the occasion of his visit to Asti to the Exhibition and Fair of National Wines). However, it is a delicate vine with a low yield, the production of which was already decreasing in the early 1900s. The story begins in 1807, in Paris, when the Marquis of Barolo Carlo Tancredi Falletti married Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a French noblewoman and the great granddaughter of the Minister of Finance Colbert by Luigi XIV . In the year 1877, the cousins Leopoldo and Ilario Ruffino  developing their own small winery in a town near Florence, Pontassieve.  Ruffino become popular for their balanced and clean wines, embracing the motto “Here We Make Ideal Wine.” The status also of Ruffino family was also established firmly both internationally and nationally when its own Ruffino Chianti won the gold medal during the Milan Wine exhibition in the year 1881, and a consolation prize during the Nice Exhibition in 1884 and another one gold medal in Antwerp Exhibition in year 1885. Because of its success, the Duke of Aosta was tasted it in Pontassieve,  and declared the Ruffino winery of Leopoldo and Ilario as the authorized supplier of wines to the royal family in the Italy.

The Swartland lies north of Paarl in a warm, low-rainfall area. About 100 km north-east of Cape Town, on the south-eastern foothills of the Kasteelberg, lies the Allesverloren wine estate. The Portuguese grape variety Tinta Barocca produces fine spicy, long-lasting red wines here.
The history of the winery dates back to the period between 1696 and 1704, when the governor of the Cape bequeathed it to a widow named Cloete. This courageous woman was one of the first settlers to venture into the inhospitable Swartland region. The first settlers were simple people who had only the most basic farming tools and necessities to support themselves. To buy tools or visit church, they had to make a long and arduous journey by wagon over primitive roads to Stellenbosch. On their return from such a journey in 1704, the settlers found their house burnt down and the farm destroyed. Hence the sad name "All Lost", meaning "all is lost". The owners of Allesverloren harvested the first grapes as early as 1806, and since the estate passed into the hands of the Malan family 140 years ago, Allesverloren has gone from strength to strength.
